Soldering issues on a Polaroid Can't Post

I'm working on a Polaroid 42 inch TV for a friend, i'm fairly familiar with soldering and working with electronic equipment and such. However i have never seen solder that couldn't be melted. i've used 4 seperate tools to try to melt the solder on these points and it simply will not heat to the point where i can remove it. i know that the issue is bad caps on the board and i've even tried using 2 different soldering guns which my father in law uses on large machines, what the hek is going on?! thanks in advance for any advice or help!!

Post pix of joints you're trying to desolder.

probably lead free solder which has a higher melting point.

Maybe he should use an iron instead?

I've ran across joints that can't seem to be de soldered.
But usually it's not an electrical connection. It's a ground bracket. Like the tuner I just put on my TV.
4 Corners of that I couldn't melt the solder. For those type of connections I (Repair guys don't read, you may cringe) use a dremel. I use aluminum oxide disk. gently grind down the tabs just before the solder is gone.

Then use a soldering chisel and smooth it out. Put your new part on.

Soldering issues on a Polaroid [In reply to] Can't Post

here is a pic of the board, even an iron with a brand new tip (40W) wasn't enough to melt it, i tried using the solder that i normally use to lower the temp resistance. nothing. i can dent it if i heat it then press hard, but that's all. it's like trying to dig through a stone wall with a spoon... i'm pretty frutrated,
sorry my phone has a shitty camera :(
thanks again for your help guys! :D

If it involves removing the metal shield, a higher wattage iron/gun should handle it. This is where a variable power solder station comes in handy.Smile

Use higher wattage ONLY on the metal shield solder tabs, nothing else.

I dont know if mine can be converted to wattage. I dont use electric soldering irons.
I use a Butane solder iron. It's adjustable for different temps. It's an all around universal tool for me. Keep the tip off and I can have a mini heat gun, or take the solder adapter off and I have a mini torch.

Soldering issues on a Polaroid [In reply to] Can't Post

ok, so i figured out that my issue WAS heat. got that taken care of now that i have replaced the caps that were bubbled the TV is still doing the same thing. i can use it for hours at a time, but once i turn it off then try to turn it back on it posts the splash screen. if any of you need any specific information it's a Polaroid TLX-04244B. it's not very old. a little over a year, but i guess these things are natorious for problems like this. Anyways, if any of you guys have any ideas let me know! thanks!
