Sony Bravia KDL-52S4100 Volume Display Stuck

I have recieved a Sony Bravia KDL-52S4100 from a friend for free because it has the following issue. When it turns on all the settings work and the picture and sound are fine, but the Volume up button will not work. Then when you push the volume down button it shows the volume bar on the tv and you can then use both the volume down and volume up buttons.
But after the volume display is on the tv it will not dissapear no matter how long you wait and you cannot push any of the other buttons to access the menu or input etc. etc. only the power button will still work. If you turn the tv off, then turn it back on the volume display is no longer on the tv and you can use the other buttons/menus again. Then if you push the volume down button again the same thing happens with the volume display being stuck on the screen until you turn the tv off.
I have tried unplugging it for a long time then plugging it back in, no luck
I have tried holding the up direction on the remote and pressing the power button on the tv itself while the tv is on but when i push the tv power button it does not turn off, so it will not factory reset.
I looked on sony's website hoping to get new firmware to put on this tv, but there are now available firmware downloads. But there is a usb service slot on the tv.
Let me know if you have any advice, its a great tv and works almost perfect accept for the annoying volume issue.
