TV blown and burning smell Can't Post

Hi there. This is my first post so please bear with me.

Make and model - Swisstec J32/2CG 32" LCD

I was watching a film earlier when all of a sudden my TV made a slight popping/thudding sound and turned itself off completely, the screen was black and the blue "on" light had gone out, not even the orange "standby" light was showing.

I turned it off at the mains, and while doing so I noticed it was quite warm. This is normal as I notice this all of the time and don't really do anything about it, I figured this time my ignorance had gotten the better of me and it had finally decided to conk out. But, this time, I could smell what seemed like burning plastic.

Anyway, I left it for a little while, turned it back on, and then it made another popping sound, this time the screen went black, but the blue "on" light stayed on.

I tried again turning it off at the mains, and then back on, and it did the same.

Finally I decided to open it up and see if I could spot the cause of the smell. There was nothing visual, so I plugged in the power lead whilst it was opened up and turned it on to see if I could smell anything. I could, and it gradually got stronger the longer I left it turned on.

I unplugged it all once more, and removed a metal lid from what seemed like the power supply. I noticed on the side of one of the larger components the plastic had melted away, and also some sort of yellow tape protecting the coil had melted.

Here are a few pictures -

Does anyone know which component it is and how much would it cost to repair?

Many thanks for your time in advance.

In your picture, it looked like possible bulged caps in the secondary. But subsequent pictures showed no close ups of that area.

Look closer there, and if they are bulged, replace.

Good luck,

Thanks Jim.

If that is the case, what's happened to the component that looks like it's fried? When I plugged in the power cable and turned it on at the switch on the TV, I could hear it sizzling and could smell the burning plastic. Now the TV won't turn on at all, so it seems as though something has definitely blown completely.

That being the case, I'm assuming you are talking about the transformer with yellow tape on it.

You can attempt to locate the part number printed on it. Normally you'll have to order the whole power supply.

Seems you were right about the bulged caps. Just opened it back up and 6 of them have gone (marked with red in image) http://i267.photobucket.com/...896.jpg?t=1342617295

This coupled with the fact that the transformers fried, I suppose I'd have no choice but to buy another power supply or scrap it?
