Toshiba 20AF44 - Picture not centered Can't Post

My son has purchased a second Nintendo gaming kiosk that uses a Toshiba CRT to display GameCube games. The picture is not centered. The entire pic needs to be shifted LEFT slightly. I have the Service Manual, and a remote, but I do not have the "patterns" that the manual calls for, and I have zero experience except that I used to run Convergence on my Rear Projection Toshiba Theatrewide years ago. What happened to the days when there was a HOR and VER knob to finetune the horizontal and Vertical settings? Is this job possible for a newbie, or should I just tell my son that he will have to live with it or find a better CRT? Thanks in advance. Ray in Dallas

I have a Service Manual for Toshiba 20AF44 TV..
The "CRT" is NOT the problem !!!
There is a Vertical Centering adjustment..
There is NO physical Horizontal Centering control..
There are 2 adjustments that may help , but , they are in the Factory Service Menu which I'm hesitant to have you get into as you easily could screw up the wrong adjustment & wind up with a 20" doorstop or a neat boat anchor..
That's contingent on you having the COMPLETE TV & NOT just a Toshiba CRT assembly attached to a Nintendo unit..

IF the chassis belongs to Nintendo & is using a Toshiba CRT assembly , you'll have to get service info from Nintendo as those & other adjustments will be their bag..
Hope this helps..
If you need more help , just ask...

Thanks Ron. It is the entire TV. I call it a CRT because that's its purpose on this kiosk. I downloaded the Service manual, and I have the remote. Are you saying that there is a "physical" Vertical Centering adjustment? I would much rather try that than to mess with the service settings. I know how challenging it is for a newbie.

I opened the TV last night to replace the C407 100micro-farad 35V cap, as this CRT/TV had the same white lines appearing onscreen as did the 14AF43 a few weeks ago on the other Nintendo kiosk.

I am all ears! Lay it on me! Thanks in advance.... Ray in Dallas

Rayford1956;...

Vertical Centering moves & centers the picture up & down...
In your 1st post you said;=>..

Quote
The entire pic needs to be shifted LEFT slightly

So you were correct in asking for help with "Horizontal Centering"...

IS the picture full sized from & at the top & bottom ???
IF So , you don't need to mess with Vertical centering...
IF NOT , post a pix , if you can , of what it looks like...
C407 is a ramp (Pump up in the manual) cap & will not help with any width problems..

C407 replacement had NOTHING to DO with THIS post. It dealt with another problem that I already resolved on a Toshiba 14AF43 last week: white lines at the top of the pic, which replacing C407 did resolve on both the 14AF43 and the 20AF44.

I got vertical & horizontal reversed in my head. The entire picture needs to shift LEFT!

Rayford1956;...

The 2 adjustments I told you about are in the "Factory Menu" ...
There is one more that I'd like you to check that MAY help...
You will need a DVM or a DC Volt meter...
Can/do you have or can you get one ???
This adjustment IS EASY to check & do if necessary...

As far as the Factory Menu goes...
How much electronic TV repair experience do you have ???
How comfortable would you be by going into the Factory Menu knowing that IF you screw up you could wind up with a 20" boat anchor or a really neat doorstop ???

Yes I have a digital Volt/Ohm meter, and Yes I know how to use it. I have experience with Toshiba Service menu on a Rear-Projection Toshiba Theatrewide 57". I corrected some geometry problems. Is this "Factory Menu" the same as the "Service Menu"? I have 36 years of Telecom engineering experience, having started with Analog technology, converted to Digital, converted to Voice over IP, converted to Linux-based servers, and most recently converted to VMware-based Virtual Servers. I am not afraid of technology. It has put food on my table since 1980.

Rayford1956;....

WOW !!!
I'm IMPRESSED with your experience & knowledge !!!..

OK . here we go:=>..

On page D-5 (pg 17 of pdf reader) of the Service Manual you'll see "TP003" near the flyback...
That is a test point for 115 vdc power supply voltage that goes to the flyback..
IF that voltage is low , it can cause a width problem..
Measure that voltage..
Should be 115 vdc ~ 1 vdc..
For more info on that adjustment see manual page D-1 (pg 13 of pdf reader) section 2.1 (Top right side)..
IF that voltage is not within spec use VR502 to adjust..
See D-5 (pg 17 of pdf reader) for location..
Be careful when you adjust this control..
Pots tend to get erratic as they age & your voltage can jump around to a high value & cause the set to shut down..

IF that voltage is OK &/or adjusting it did not fix the problem , our next step is in the "Service Menu" AKA "Factory Menu"
One in the same...

IF that did NOT help you can try :=>..

2-5: HORIZONTAL PHASE

1. Receive the monoscope pattern. <<Use on-air TV channel or STEADY video from Nintendo game..
2. Using the remote control, set the brightness and contrast to normal position.
3. Activate the adjustment mode display of Fig. 1-1 and
press the channel button (03) on the remote control to
select "H.PHAS".
4. Press the VOL. UP/DOWN button on the remote control until the SHIFT quantity of the OVER SCAN on right and left becomes minimum..
See manual page D-1 (pg 13 of pdf reader) lower right side.

When you enter the Service mode use ONLY #9 to enter ..
That is the one listed LAST in the "SERVICE MODE LIST"..
See page C-1 (pg 12 of pdf reader)...

BTW:...
There IS a H.SIZE listed in the adjustments...
Since there is no instructions on how to adjust it , I'm not sure that it can be/is adjustable..

Hope this helps !!!
Let us know how it went...
Thanks..

Re: [Ron.M] Toshiba 20AF44 - Picture not centered [In reply to] Can't Post

Sorry, I have not yet attempted to correct the picture. We had a family situation that needed to be handled, but now I am back on track with this project. I will give it a shot tonight, and will post the results. Thank you for taking the time to post all those details.
Regarding my experience: I never joined today's "disposable society". My wife complains about it, but when something breaks - I at least TRY to fix it. I am successful most of the time. The reason that today's society disposes of "stuff" when it breaks (in my opinion) - no one knows how to fix anything anymore. When I was 10, my dad bought me a new "transistor radio". I tore it apart the first night, but unfortunately I was not able to re-assemble it 100%. It worked, but my dad was not happy. Fifty years later, I am still fixing things. Like anything, it takes a lot of failure to actually learn how to succeed! I expect to succeed tonight. Cheers!
