Toshiba problem. Can't Post

I really hope someone here can help me figure out this problem with my Toshiba 36" TV. Model 3X35F60.

The TV will be fine one minute then suddenly it will shut down and the red power indicator light which is normally steady begins to blink. Sometimes the TV would come back on of its own accord sometimes it would after turning it off for a few minutes. As of yesterday it will not come on at all and after blinking for a few minutes it shuts itself off completely.

Any ideas? Your input will be greatly appreciated as I don't have the money for a new set now. Thanx all.

My bad. Model number is CX35F60. That's what you get for reading fine print in the dark.
Anyway Jts do you think this could be a tube problem? I'm a HVAC tech so this is not so foreign to me although electronics are a component I'll replace and toss in the trash. I have very little experience repairing/troubleshooting electronic components. I also seem to have good luck with TVs therefore never had to repair one.

Dang! And just when I almost found the service literature.

Bad solder joints around heavy components (flybacks, transformers), thick leaded parts, 1 watt and larger resistors, for example, any part that's mounted to a heat sink.Unimpressed

Okay JTS, I'll take out the main board and check out the connections and stuff. What is a flyback?
It's back to doing the same thing, last night it went all evening with no problems, now nothing. Just the blinking red light and it shuts off.

Would pics help?

I got access to the board, the big one on the bottom and the rest. I see no obvious defects in the soldering or wiring. I'll put up some pics later today. I need to disconnect the tube from the main board but the cable doesn't want to cooperate and I don't know if the tube still holds a charge. I am assuming it is. Should it just pull off?

First picture. This is the main board that sits on the bottom. I know what the heatsinks are and what they do, there is also a small transformer next to the white block and it the left corner is the on off switch. The large red wire is from the anode on the tube. What does the black thing its attached to do? It can be adjusted evidently. I'm going to go check out your link and see what I can find JTS.

Main filter electrolytic has been subjected to so much heat that the shrink tubing on its outside has shrunken excessively. I'd at least pull and check value and ESR.
Connector shown unplugged is by you, I presume?
Black "thing" is flyback transformer. Focus and Screen (G2) adjustments.

Yeah, the loose wires are my work.

I can't see what you're talking about, the black thing behind the flyback?

I also can't seem to disconnect the anode wire from the tube, it just doesn't want to come out whatever I do. It does move though and I did ground the tube per the safety instructions.

Okay I found how to get it out on Youtube, I was just paranoid of busting something off. Anyway, for the sake of any other amateurs out there I'll share it.

I don't see it, nothing appears to be burnt on any of the wiring and none of the components seem to be damaged.

Working from the on off switch towards the flyback you come across your "a small transformer" then the "white block" then before you get to the first of two heat sinks, you come across a tall round aluminum can with a black plastic wrapper with the capacitors ratings printed on it.Wink

OY!! I see it now, all of the other capacitors have the black cover up and over the edge of the top. It is also slightly rounded/bulged. I think it's bad.

Anyway, it's a 470uf cap at 200v. 24086862.

I'll keep you updated JTS. I think this may be the problem. I need to get a soldering iron and the capacitor. It may take a few days.

Got the soldering kit today. Now I need to find the capacitor, neither Frys or Radioshack have it. Still looking, any advice? I found one on the internet but it had no picture and I'm afraid to buy it because it may be different.

Digikey, Mouser, ebay.
470ufd 200 volt Radial leads 105C would be good, but 85C should work - look at original.

Re: [Scrat] Toshiba problem. [In reply to] Can't Post

Alright. I have the capacitor. Now I ran into another problem, I can't get the red anode wire off the tube or the flyback. At the tube end there is a rubber cover, when you lift it up you see something like a spade connector connected to the anode. The flyback connection is in the picture above. I fiddled with both of them but I don't want to go torquing on them because I'm afraid to break something. How do you get these damn things off?

I need to get the board totally out of the TV and onto the table. Also, is there a specific way the capacitor goes in the board?

I usually let board pivot by the wire while weight is on the opposite edge.

http://www.curto-circuito.com/...TV/Aiwa/TV-A1419.pdf

Capacitor and board should be marked with the correct polarity. Wink

I have been studying up on soldering techniques via Youtube and I need to get a desoldering braid. I'm going to put the new cap in the same way the markings were on the old since they look to be the same pattern. I also need to study up on the symbology.
