Will a set-top box fix my problem? Mitsubishi Can't Post

Hi guys,

Tv is a Mitsubishi diva - CT29ac2s(a)

I Turned my tv on other day, its about 10 yrs old now, and now has two reasonably thick white horizontal lines that sort of move up/down very slowly wrecking the image behind them and the audio now has this consistent "rhhhmmrmhrrhhm" white noise/fuzzy sound over the actual tv audio.

The tv works fine when watching a dvd or playing the Wii.

Is the tv stuffed? whats the problem? repairable?

Would buying a Set top box and going to diigital fix it? ie. buy digital STB then plug into the tv via S-video etc.... do you think this would solve the issue? my thinking is that it's something to do with the tv's signal reciever, and thus if i convert to digital with a STB it might still work for awhile. thoughts?

Thanks in advance!

p.s. my housemate thinks that when I vaccummed near the tv that's what broke it... anything truth to that?

No and no. You have a fault. I would suggest C915 or C916 has given up the ghost. Your mains filtering is faulty. Now these are mains filters 250uF400V from memory if you get into the back of the TV you must know that these guys can hold a very substantial charge even when the set is off so they must always be discharged before you do anything. Otherwise it can throw you or your arm without your control, and you will hit whatever is in your way at a substantial speed.

From your description, I would think that your vacuuming has damaged the antenna cable from the wall outlet to the tv tuner- substitute cable to check- if was p/s in set would be as bad on dvd play. A set top box may well introduce other probs such as antenna faults(digital requires 1st class antenna system).Unsure

Yep sorry Im wrong didnt take heed of the DVD being OK must be the lead, what you see suggests the earth is floating and picking up the mains.

For that one the answer is no. you must have hit the cable or knocked it out or bashed in the wall socket.
