rca tv ctc169 power supply problem

I have a 31in. rca tv with a ctc169 aun chassie
model G31151wk. the first thing that happen
was the picture came in to a narrow virtical line.
turned set off at once,5 min. later tried to turn set on
set was dead.called tech, he checked fuse [ok]
said it could be repaired and removed chassie and
took it with him.2weeks later he brought back unit
and said he could not spend any more time trying
to repair and to junk tv.charged service call fee
I would like to repair this tv my self. joseph
I have had electronic experience but not tv.
