less? - Less than what? nutin'?

Here are just two of many possible sites.
http://www.replacementremotes.com/...p.cfm?productid=5853

http://www.remotehound.com/sony-rm-744-p33337.html
Q. Do I have to program these remotes?
A. No, Remote Hound specializes in replacing your original factory remote. It will match the picture in your owner's manual and will not need to be programmed. It will operate every feature your remote was intended to operate. If the original remote is no longer available, Remote Hound will usually find a substitute that will include all the features without programming. We also guarantee that you will be 100% satisfied or we'll refund your money back in full.

Will work as soon as batteries are installed.

If channels are manually entered on these or even a universal remote (for example: "3" then "Enter") you still have a "Add" or "Erase" button (usually on set apron/under a cover)

I picked up a Sony RM-V8A universal remote at Fry's electronics for around $5.00 and not only saved myself shipping fess but also got instant gratification.

It was doing fine until my wife replaced it with a larger HiDef flat screen. I gave it to a friend who was enjoying it until his death last week. I also earned one for one of the grandkids who are still using it and it is working fine.
