Bell Howell VCR Display faded...

The display on the VCR itself is faded from left to right. The left side is semi-bright, and the right side is barely readable. Any suggestions? IN the bottom right corner of the display, there seems to be an LED of somesort that might have burnt out (there is a black spot on the inside of the glass)??? please help, i am fixing it for my friend
