Nuvispec (JVC) vcr model:VTS-03 Can't Post

Nuvispec time lapse vcr model:VTS-03,year:Jan 1994,UL Listed:439 (JVC),this chassis does not have a VF display only on screen menu which stopped displaying when the menu button was pressed, the customer smelled some odd smell prior to the the menu screen no longer appearing,I found the 3.6v,40 mah Ni-cad Varta battery corroded all over.
I replaced the battery but menu still does not show up so customer cannot control features, anyone have any common repait tips?.
This time lapse vcr does have the small 3.6v battery on a small seperate board and there was a bit of corrosion near it like on a 75 ohm,1/4 watt resistor which I decided to replace anyways but there is National Semiconductor transistor with the following markings:

038
7213
CBE

which I don't know what it crosses to and I assumed that it was a NPN so I decided to put in a different NPN transistor with the same pinouts but now the vcr does not come on but will come on with a tape inserted and perform functions except menu but it still does not come on.
What is the ECG,NTE or SK Thomson for that transistor as that board has no pcb locations?.Thank.
