Sound as if the tape trasport may be out of time, this tells the main micro processer to shut down the unit to prevent any damage. many shops (mine included) will retime the set when we clean it at no or very little more charge, if the problem is not timinig repairing the problem usaly cost more than replacing the VCR

Try this: (actually found in user manual...)

Pro-Tect Plus™ (Child Lock) Feature

This feature is useful to tamper proof your timer recordings from unwanted changes

and/or protect the VCR from misoperation by other users in the household.

To Lock the VCR

Press and hold POWER or VCR on the remote for

approximately six seconds to turn on the Pro-Tect Plusª

feature.

SAFE appears in the VCR front panel to let you know the

feature is activated.

To Unlock the VCR

Press and hold VCR button on the remote for approximately

six seconds to unlock the VCR.

It worked for me. Best of luck!

Re: [mel1976] RCA VCR, Says "Safe" on display, won't let me do anything, then shuts off [In reply to] Can't Post

Hello everyone,
I have the same problem with my VR 540, hit the power botton and "safe" is displayed. The vcr will do nothing. I tried the power botton method that was posted but it did nothing for me. I aslo tried unpluging the unit for a while but this also was of no help. If I load a tape in it just kicks it back out and gives me that super dupper "safe" message. I do not have the units remote so I'm using an RCA smartlink 8 AV to run it. I would not even care if this thing worked but for some reason my RCA F19432 TV will not pick up cable channels past 13 so I need this vcr to act as a tunner. It has been fine till this problem other then I hate the auto shut off on the VCR, but I'm geting of track. If someone can give me some info on how to make it go or repair it I would be very happy. Tearing it apart is no problem if that is what needs to happen. I can not affort to replace it right now and only having channels up 13 is not cutting it. Ohhhh the pain!

Well after taking a secon shot at this it did work! I was holding the botton on the VCR because I was using a replacement remote and it did not take care of the problem. But today when I used the remote it did unlock the VCR.
Thanks
