S-VHS image problem: black horizontal streaks right of dark/light edges

Hi
I'm busy digitising VHS tapes and I'm seeing a distinctive image problem on some but not all of my tapes. I'm using a JVC S-VHS deck. The problem occurs where there is a strong dark/light transition which results in dark horizontal streaks reaching out to the right into the bright area. Since it's on some but not all of my tape collection, I'm assuming it arises from a fault at the time of recording and so perhaps not fixable. But it would be good to know if anyone has ideas of how it could be fixed or reduced before I continue with digitising scores of tapes. Could it be some kind of issue to do with an overdriven signal?
