Sony / Zenith SL-2500 won't Play / FFWD / RWD

Hi everyone, I have just managed to finally get my hands on a Sony / Zenith SL-2500 Betamax player.
As expected, it does have some problems. Hopefully somebody here will be able to give me some advice on where to focus my attention on a repair.
Tapes load and eject seemingly fine and everything looks ok. If I try to press Play / FFWD / REW then the head spins for a couple of seconds and then stops.
The reel motors don't appear to try and turn at all, just the head.
Anyone any ideas?
