Sony SLV EZ44 Problem

Hi I am new to the forum - I have a Sony SLV EZ44 VCR (I am not sure how old it is) which I was playing a tape when it just died on me. The tape is now stuck inside the VCR and will not eject. I cannot switch the VCR on - all it does is display the time - none of the buttons on the VCR or remote work (except I can cycle through the video channels). Can anyone suggest a fix or is the best option just to buy a new VCR???? Please help.
