VCR/ Xbox difficulties

 I have a Panasonic VCR...I also have an X-box game consol....my problem is that whenever I try to use my X-box...I cannot get a picture...I mean I see the picture in the background of the blue screen but am unable to get it to fully work.I don't know exactly how to get to the input screen.I have tried programming the channels but to no avail as I do not have cable....any suggestions?
