VCR power supplys are a switching supply and when the go several capacitor and a few transisters have to be changed, in most cases this is clasified as a major repair by shops, or the entire supply if removable can be replaced but at a cost of betwean 25 and $85. And with the cost of new VCRs starting at about $35 many people just replace them
