I live in Milwaukee, WI. From what I learned, we were one of the last major cities to be supplied with a cable TV company, because of a fight between The Warner and Marcus cable companies. And before Warner (now Time Warner) won the fight, there was a couple channels that provided a subscribed premium movie channel. In Milwaukee it was "Select TV" which was on the second half of the day on channel 24 (the first half of the day was standard programming, but later in the evening the local station signed off, leaving the airwave open), and "TV Q", which was a local affiliate for HBO. Both were only obtained by having a crudely designed aerial installed on the roof (which can still be seen on peoples roofs) and aimed at the First Wisconsin building downtown (now US Bank building) and possibly a descrambler box to get the signal on TV. Any of you people out there ever had these odd kinds of premium channels? I hope Milwaukee wasn't the only one.
