How to convert Reg. Cable to HD? Can't Post

Hey, I wanted to buy a new DLP TV, but as i saw in the store that without HD channels, the quality of the picture is pretty much crap. My current neighborhood doesn't have HD for all channels, only about 5-6 main ones.

I wanted to know:

1) Is it possible to take regular digital cable and show it on an HDTV in good resolution? If so, how?

2) What extra cables/boxes would i have to purchase, and how much would they cost (just a range)?

3) If it is possible and works, how good will the resolution be?

4) What is HDMI?

5) Any extra links and info sites would be great

Thanks again, and hope for a quick reply.

Some basic information

HDMI is a digital input for HD picture and digital audio. This is needed if you are only using the speakers in the set and not a A/V receiver and surround speakers.

If you have A/V receiver you would connect the video source ( HD cable box ) with the HDMI,and still use the digital ( toslink ) from cable box to A/V receiver.

DVI is HD video and no audio. You need to connect the toslink from cable box to A/V receiver or audio cables to the tv.

You can upconvert the signal to HD quality. You use a video scaler

Video scaler information-

The DVDO® iScan™ VP20 is a high-definition video processor and A/V hub that converts standard or high definition from your DVD Player, VCR, PVR, HD set-top box, game console or PC to any of the predefined output resolutions between 480p and 1080p, including popular HDTV resolutions such as 720p or 1080i.

The VP20 serves as your complete A/V hub, providing simultaneous audio/video switching with video up/ down/ cross-conversion with one digital HDMI connection to your display or projector.
Price $1699.00

You really don't need a video scaler just to watch tv.The problem cable is that the channels from 1-99 are still analog will look bad on a bigger screen.
Sat tv is all digital and all channels look good if sat is an option for you.

Remeber when buying cables you get what you pay for,but you can also over pay.

These cables and websites all have a good product/ price ratio.
I have purchased from both of these sites.

A video scaler....that's what I've been looking for. Sat tv is too expensive long-term. The scaler you mentioned...$1699?! My budget for something like that would be $200 max. Could you please provide me with some links to reliable converters/scalers by good companies?

Also, can you explain how the connections would work? would it be straight from the wall to the scaler, to the tv? or from the wall, to a dvd player, to the scaler, then to the tv?

You would connect from the source or sources to video scaler and than one cable from scaler to tv.

You run a s-video or rca cable from the cable box to the video scaler, then run a single DVI or HDMI to tv.Repeat process for VCR or Dvd players.A video scaler accepts from 3 - 12 different video sources.

DVDO is a good company.

Remember you get what you pay for with video scalers,a cheap one might not be as good as the one in the DLP tv set.

There is only one Hd player on the market now. The blue-ray from Toshiba.

All the rest are progessive scan dvd player which upconvert to 480p which isn't considered HD. It is ED.

No a dvd cannot upconvert an outside source.
