Quick Question Re Side Bars

Hello,
My daughter just gave us a 4 year old (hardly used) Panasonic TH-42PHW5 TV -- it works great.
We cannot figure out how to change the size of the picture on screen. We have side bars on most channels. In reading the guide (written by someone who needs to go to "how to write instructions" school), it seems we can change the width of the picture. However, following their instructions, it didn't work. I did find one channel up in the HDTV section of the cable lineup for CBS where it worked, but that was about it!
The guide also says we can change the color of the side bars -- however, I see no difference when changing them from grey light to medium to dark.
Any help would be appreciated!!
