Is it 720p or 1080p? Can't Post

Hey everyone, this has been bothering me since I bought this TV. I purchased an Insignia 32" television for the sole purpose of playing my xbox360 video game console on. It was advertised very clearly on the box as a 720p/1080i LCD. I brought it home and noticed that the option to run my 360 in 1080p was now available. I had my 360 hooked up to and even older 20" 720p HDTV before and the option of running in 1080p was clearly grayed out (i wasn't able to select it). So with my 360 set to 1080p on my new TV, the TV now says in the upper right conrner that it's running in 1080p 60Hz when I start the console.
Why in the world would my 720p television allow me to run it in 1080p? it was sold as a 720p television by the sales guy and it's marked clearly on the box! I'm so confused. It does look slightly better when set to 1080p, although not a huge difference. If it was a 720p/1080i television, would it even have the capability of displaying 1080p 60Hz in the upper right hand corner? Please help clarify this for me.
Thanks.
