LCD on a porch question Can't Post

My apologies if this has been asked before. I searched but didn't find it.

We are located in upstate, NY and have a closed in porch with a gas "woodstove". The winters can get rather cold here but seldom go below 0dF but it's not impossible. We do not heat the porch in the winter unless we want to use it, which we do a fair amount on weekends.

Before using we always go out and turn on the stove and bring the room temperature up to around 68dF or so before even attempting to use the porch. That usually takes about an hour. The TV sits approximately 3 feet to the side of the stove but we also have fans that distribute the heat around the room.

We currently have a CRT out there but would like to replace it with a 40"ish class High def. tv.

All manufactures that I've asked have given the blanket 'no' answer just probably to protect themselves, but do you folks think a LCD or LED/LCD could tolerate those conditions?

sparkie491;....

1st off , I do NOT work on LCD , LED or Plasma TVs....
That said;....
I do know that LED/LCD screens are VERY delicate...
I'm told that they have a super thin layer of glass built in...
That & other factors make an LED/LCD TV prone to repetitive heat expansion & cold contractions that would destroy the panels in short order...(Includes Plasma TVs)

You may even have problems with a "conventional" projection TV out there in those adverse conditions...

So , I would emphatically join the manufacturers & say NO !!!

Good Luck....Smile...

Have a GREAT day & week....Sly....

Bummer, but thanks for the reply. All caveats noted... Wink

Any idea what would work? We've had a 32" Sony out there for years and it's fine but not HD and getting fairly old.

Thanks Ron

sparkie491;....

Personally , I'd shop around for a GOOD used CRT TV...
Not sure whats out there for a new HD CRT type set as CRT TVs have gone the way of 8 track players...

Good Luck...Sly....& stay warm....Smile....

sparkie491;....

For me it is the ONLY answer !!!!
For you , not so good....Unsure....

You can also try a GOOD used rear projection HD TV...
They have 3 small CRTs in them...
The ONLY thing that concerns me about that is that that type TV has acrylic lenses that hold ethelyne glycol CRT coolant (NO wise answers here , please) that may be a problem...
I'm not worried about the coolant , but the lenses...
O* is a lot colder than what the sets were designed for...
But it may be worth a shot , IF the price is right...
IF you do go that route , make SURE the porch is WELL warmed up as it WILL take longer for the set to lose any condensation that may be built up inside...

GOOD LUCK on your quest....Sly....

Thanks, you're input is appreciated. You'd think with the technology available today they'd have someway to deal with that. I mean a lot of people have camps in cold weather areas for skiing, hunting, etc - oh well. Thanks again

sparkie491;.....

Let me make this perfectly CLEAR !!!!
An LCD is STILL an LCD no matter how it is lit...
An LED is STILL an LED no matter how it is lit...

A "backlit lcd" is STILL a LCD !!!..
A "led backlit" is STILL a LED !!!
Any combination thereof STILL is a LED OR LCD !!!!
BTW;...
Just to keep things on the up & up , I also feel the SAME way about PLASMA TVs....

FYI;....
It's your money...
It'll be your TV....
It's your call...

Once again, Have a GREAT evening & week....Sly.....

oh alright... if you're gonna be that way... lol

I actually probably knew the answer before I asked the question. Kinda like a kid asking if it's a bad idea to go jump in the lake in January in Upstate New York.
