Panasonic Plasma - Horizontal thin black Line Can't Post

I have an 18 months old Panasonic 50" Plasma. About a month ago, a black thin line appeared about two inches above the bottom of the panel ( about where the streaming news) and stays there. What's this? Solutions?

i don't quite understand howyou understand if it's just an interference like you said appearing above the streaming news. does it happen to other channels? other than this particular channel Im assuming you were watching at the time? did you play something besides the tuner?..18 months ago is too long but too soon to have the panel direct to this defect. Any other equipment, you added lately? have you recently disconnect and connecting the cables?

Thank you for your response. The black thin line is permanently etched. It's there even when you play dvd. I am afraid this might be a Panansonic plasma problem that is specifically excluded from warranty that the factory knows it cannot stand behind this product.
I would like to hear from anyone that has experienced the same problem and their resolutions.

In that case, the thin filament is burnt out in that area although it will gradually cause more lines in your unit in the future. This is not a common problem not just from PANASONIC. in fact, seldom to happen in any of their units. Well, to assure you. do not attempt bringing this type of situation for repair, Since this is inside the plasma, there's no solution to this type of problem. I may add however that if in the future you go paying for any type of warranty purposes. I came to find out that ABT electronics has replacement warranty from the store itself. like this type of situations. So, enjoy every moment with the remaining time left in the display and move on.

Re: [denonjapan] Panasonic Plasma - Horizontal thin black Line [In reply to] Can't Post

Is this burnt out thin filament caused by viewing fixed images including letter box pictures on standard 4:3 screen TVs or on screen data in a stationary and fixed location?
Or is this an uncommon Panasonic plasma panel factory defect?
What is the basis of your "burnt out filament" conclusion? Are you a specialist in this area that I can rely on to attempt a warranty claim? The plasma panel is within the warranteed period of two years if your expert opinion is that it is a factory defect and not caused by what I described in the first paragraph.
Thank you for your response.

A thin filament or commonly called an>Address electrode>A grid of tiny electrodes applies an electric current to the individual cells in order to glow. These hairline thinlike filament are layered underneath the pixels it can fail anytime without specific time or reason. A period of 18 months in your possesion is long enough to think that it may somehow subjected to abuse mainly from power failure, How often you turn on and off the display a day, extended use, or overheating. All Panasonic displays passed the U.L. united laboratory test before selling to costumers. However, Manufacturer do not warrant this type of nature problem in attempt of replacement especially after almost 2 years. Factory defect is only considered defective from brand new open box or within the store policy of 30-90 day period, after that, it's costumers responsibility.
Also, be very aware if Plasma panel has 2 years manufacturer's direct warranty maybe honored ONLY, if you bought your display from an authorized PANASONIC DEALER and if you did remember sending your registry forms back to Panasonic, proof of purchased, and model nos. Those were included inside the owner's manual at the time of purchase. Panasonic dealer listings can be obtain thru PANASONIC CORP. in your area.

Re: [denonjapan] Panasonic Plasma - Horizontal thin black Line [In reply to] Can't Post

Thank you for your response. Your statement seems to support the "factory defect" argument as none of what you described fall under the exception described for warranty coverage. I read somewhere that the panel is good for 50,000 hours - that's 5 years, 7/24 of continuous watching. Panasonic makes better products than a panel that last only 18 months. This is my first Panasonic TV. My Sonys, Sharps just keep on ticking!
I will ask for inspection by their authorized video engineer. I have all the documentations you suggested so that Panasonic cannot hide behind some technicalities.

Well, goodluck! I just want to give you a straight answer without you hoping for anything. And with regards of exception for warranty coverage?. There should be direct from manufacturer for 2 years from the date of the unit being purchased. Services includes:. Free of labor, estimate parts and labor from the authorized PANASONIC repair service in your area. But here's the catch! > there are restrictions within their policy in replacing refurbish parts or glass panels in case their decision push through. Panasonic tech isn't going to tell you if you're not aware all of these. As far as the tech actually repair your unit inside your home isn't going to happen, if someone will come inspect your tv is only to observe all possible sign of abuse, improper usage or connections, and etc. In any event, Panasonic will then decide if to replace your unit to a refurbished model is most likely, and in order to get that coverage is make sure you purchased the tv originally from their authorized dealers or else, you loose....
Moreover, to date 2 years ago. Most plasma displays can reach 50-60,000 hours. That is the expected lifespan calculated based on a daily average users. That doesn't mean, all panels made should reach that expentancy. Some may reach even longer than expected, and some unfortunately will fail due to uncertainty. Their lifespan isn't just based on their name brand. it can happen to SONY or SHARP. it's not a matter of choice, it's their nature. take care!

Re: [waltliu] Panasonic Plasma - Horizontal thin black Line [In reply to] Can't Post

Waltliu,
My Panasonic Plasma also developed a thin black horizontal line a couple of days ago. I'm very upset about this problem. You would think that when you spend almost $2000 on a product, it would last for more than 18 months. My black line is about 8" up from the bottom. My TV is exactly 18 months old just like yours. Have you had any luck with a warranty claim? Where did you see a 2 year warranty on the panel? I only saw a one year warranty in the owner's manual.

Before you go condemning the panel I'd certainly try changing the lower Y buffer board. It's quite possible that's the problem with your units.

This could be due to the reason of improper placement of resolution while switching on your TV therefore you should contact to your provider for further process

That makes two - anybody else?
The two year panel warranty (excluding labor)is in my manual - in the same warranty declaration as the one year warranty (including labor).

The repair guy was over and it was definitely the panel. Luckily, the TV is only 18 month old and the warranty is two years, so they will send a new panel. It is still going to cost me $300 for the labor though. I'm very unhappy about the quality of this TV. This is the second major repair in 18 months. I doubt if I'll buy another Panasonic.

Was the repairman referred by Panasonic under its warranty authorized video engineer list and charges $70 for the inspection?
1. Did he say what was wrong or provide a report?
2. Is this not a panel swap?
3. Why $300 for labor if it's plug and unplug to set-up the new panel presumably shipped to your house?

changing a plasma panel is not a 5 minute job.in some cases you can say goodbye to a couple of hours. the new pane has to be set up with various voltage adjustments as well as the physical dismantling and reassembly.$300 is cheap. there's nothing free in this world anymore

Re: [waltliu] Panasonic Plasma - Horizontal thin black Line [In reply to] Can't Post

I have the same problem. The black line appeared on my 50" set a few days ago. Bad news is that it happened 4 days after the two year panel warranty expired. Good news is that my Credit Card company extends the warranty for an additional year. I have it in the shop now for evaluation.

Does anyone know the cost of a new 50" panel? If the cost is higher than the value of the set, my CC company will just reimburse the original cost and I can apply that to a new set.
My set was model TH50PX600U. Since is was two years old in March, that makes its purchase date about the same as the two who earlier reported sets that were 18 months old in the fall of 2008. Could this have been a problem with a series of panels manufactured about the same time?

Re: [txtom] Panasonic Plasma - Horizontal thin black Line [In reply to] Can't Post

the cost of a new panel will be more than the set cost new which is why so few get changed.these panels are no more reliable than any other parts for crt type tv's so its no surprise it has failed after 2 years.

Actually that works out fine for me. I'll get reimbursed the original cost and can purchase a new improved set. Might even be able to step up to a new 58" for the same price I paid two years ago.

Didn't quite understand your reference to reliability of crt type tv's since I've never ever had anything go bad on one of them. I usually give them away after a few years so that I can get something better.

Re: [txtom] Panasonic Plasma - Horizontal thin black Line [In reply to] Can't Post

what I meant was a lot of people think because flat panel tv's are new technology they must be more reliable than old type tv's, which is just not the case.As a tech of course I only see the stuff that goes wrong and I used to think crt tv's were not very reliable (apart from Panasonic) but some of the new stuff on the market is just plain junk.

Re: [techchris] Panasonic Plasma - Horizontal thin black Line [In reply to] Can't Post

OK, that makes sense and I couldn't agree more. Actually I would expect any new technology to have a higher rate of failure until the technology is perfected. Since things advance so fast, we never reach perfection before moving on to the next 'better' thing.

I've already talked with my CC company and if the repair costs more than the item new then they'll just pay the original cost. Thinking of getting either a new Panasonic 58" or Samsung 58". Any recommendations? I like both but am wondering about reliability of each as I hope the next one lasts a bit longer.
