i just purchased a 42 inch plasma and have heard they need to be " calibrated" by a professional. can someone tell me if this is necessary and how much difference it makes.

Honestly no, you can get a video essential disk and do it yourself, but even after I calibrated it myself using the disk I didn't keep those settings, I adjusted to my own liking anyway. I would put in a good HDTV or DVD source on and just manually adjust it to your liking. If you watch movies at night then adjust it at night using your light source (room) that you normally use. I recommend turning the contrast and sharpness down to about 40% and then adjust your brightness to your liking, usually between 40-60%. If blacks look grey instead of black then your contrast and/or brightness are probably to high. let me know how it comes out.
