sound stops and starts with no pattern

We have a Hitachi 42PD7800 that works find except for the sound. The sound will suddenly stop working, it may come back on for a short period and will stop again. This usually happens after a few hours or more of TV viewing. I have check the external speakers (this model has detachable speakers with the speaker wires easily accessible on the outside of the unit) speaker wires, removing them and replacing them back again. This doesnt fix the problem though. I am guessing it may be an over heating issue as it occurs after a substantial amount of viewing time. This unit also has the speaker wires loop through what seems to be a small cylinder magnet.
Any help would be appreciated.
