Blue Blur On Screen Can't Post

Let me start off by saying that I do not know anything about TV repair.

I own a 55 inch Philips Rear Projection HDTV. It was given to me by a friend. He got rid of it because the screen was blurry. I was able to figure out how to adjust the three lens and the convergence (I believe that it was it was called) to help with most of the blur. When I was adjusting the everything for the blue tube/lens, nothing changed. So I blocked the light from the other two lens. Instead of projecting a blue image on the screen, it projected a blue blur.

Any ideas on what I might have to replace to fix this problem? And maybe a guide/tutorial on repairing/replacing parts on rear projection TVs?

Examine (search) for threads on contaminated coolant.

Re: [jts1957] Blue Blur On Screen [In reply to] Can't Post

Actually, I removed the container containing the coolant from the bulb not realizing that it contained a nasty/dirty liquid. I did do a search to find out it was coolant and that it can be purchased at any TV repair store. I am going to see if I can find a store in my area that sells it. Though it will be a while before I reply with my results, because I am in a different city due to a hurricane. I should get to go back home Thursday morning. I am also tight on cash, so if the coolant is too expensive, I may have to wait.

Thanks for the info though man.

DarkXPSX;...

Jts1957 & I are running on 2nd &/or 3rd string computers...
I don't think he'd mind if I added my 2 cents worth here....
(Well , maybe a buck , two fifty....)

CRT coolant IS POISONOUS !!!!
It is ethelene glycol , aka anti-freeze....
Same stuff you use in car radiators for cooling the engines....
Only this is processed till it's clear , no green color...
IF you spill any of it on the TV chassis , you WILL have a problem as it's also very corrosive & will eat away on electronic components & their connections...
It's also conductive , which means that if any coolant is spilled or left on the circuitry & you turn the TV on , you can cause severe damage to the set...

Blue is the 1st & worst color to go bad...
When you see the blue bad , 99% of the time the green is also bad , so chances are that you will have 2 tubes to change out....
99% of the time , the red CRT is OK & does not need to be changed....
Coolant runs $6~$8.00 USD , per bottle which has enough for one CRT , depending on where you get it...
So you can figure about $12~$16 + shipping & handling for the 2 bottles....

Here is a sample ONLY of what you are in for;=>....

http://www.riddledtv.com/...RTCoolant/index.html

Do NOT use this proceedure on YOUR TV....
There is a variation(s) that will cause you a problem(s) in this proceedure...

IF you still have the cajones to continue on , please post the model number & the chassis number (Will be DPTV??? ) & I'll see what further assistance I can get for you...

I SINCERELY hope your home & family are OK ...
"Irene" did an IMMENSE amount of damage up & down the East Coast...

Have a GREAT day & week....Sly.....

Re: [DarkXPSX] Blue Blur On Screen [In reply to] Can't Post

this is actually a very easy fix. i fixed mine and it looks better than my plasma *CHUCKLES*
first use an old acetone bottle to suck out the old fluid, then dissassemble the lenses and clean out all the crud.
then reassemble the lenses (be careful not to overtorque the screws or it will affect the optics)
then install the fluid (you can use baby oil) and WOLLAH!
i dont even fix tv's for a living (i'm a laser tech supervisor) but this job only took about 2.5 hours
good luck!

Oh yeah, I still plan on doing this. I am not going to learn if I do not try. I am going to go ahead and order the coolent now. My only other question is, what type of cloth and liquid should I use to clean the areas that need to be cleaned?

Also, the the TV's model is a Philips 55PW9363. I still have to check for the chassis number. Though I will say that the inside of the TV resembles what is on the pictures to the website (http://www.riddledtv.com/...RTCoolant/index.html) that you guys linked.

DarkXPSX;....

Sorry this is going to be a fairly long post , but I have to set you straight on guss67 , aka Gus67 & my name for him/her/it , "Gussie girl".....

BEWARE of guss67....
I think he was banned for various reasons...
His original moniker was Gus67...
He apparently changed his name to get back on here to antagonise me & others as well....
He has created a HELL of a LOT of consternation for me & other posters/techs here....
He is an egotistical , narcissistic , sociopath with psychopathic tendencies...
Not to mention a superiority complex...
He does NOT accept criticism or correction at all....
He & I go back years & he is an arrogant , argumentive SOB !!!!
He's trying to be nice now , but we'll see just how long that lasts....

Some samples from Gus67;=>...
http://www.tv-forums.com/...cgi?post=96026#96026
This has to do with 2 TVs using the same remote....
He freely admits that he knows NOTHING about TVs , yet he challenged my advice.....

Gussie69 is an egotistical narcisstic sociopath who thinks he is a electronic whiz....
The only thing that whizzes about him is what runs down his leg....
I've had numerous run-ins with him before & he's back to his old tricks again....
Somebody that can't tell the difference from a tiny diode & a full sized bridge rectifier is in NO position to be giving technical advice....
His lack of experience shows at every turn...
Check some of his other posts....
I reccomend you follow others advice...
(Lost this arguement over a zener diode with knowledgeable tech here)

Self explanatory.....

One of his lies;...
I am an Electronics Tech and I am capable of component level
troubleshooting but have no schematics to start with.

What's he doing here then ???

He lost an arguement over a diode , a torque wrench & tightening screws...
He's mad at me because I (AND EVERYONE else here) refused to give him the code for the "Factory Menu" .....
Later on he wanted a service manual that I have & refused to give him , so he is pissed he had to spend $16.00 to buy it...
NO ONE else here offered it to him either !!!!....(I know at least one other tech here that had it..)
He acts childish & VERY juvenile....
More later......

DarkXPSX;....
About the TV;=>...

Quote
what type of cloth and liquid should I use to clean the areas that need to be cleaned?

I reccommend Windex or similiar non-abrasive glass cleaner & a clean "T-shirt" or clean cotton diaper.....
Wipe gently as the lenses are made of acrylic plastic & can be easily scratched causing a line(s) or blurryness in the pix...
Rinse with tap water & dry thoroughly....
Do NOT try to remove the tan colored pattern on the CRT face...
That is a permanent discoloration on the inside of the CRT from years of use ...
Commonly called a burn-in....
You will not see that in the pix when you are done...

Quote
Also, the the TV's model is a Philips 55PW9363. I still have to check for the chassis number.

My main computer is down & I have no access to my manuals...
IF you give me the chassis number , maybe I can find & download a free manual that maybe of help later on....
Not a big deal right now.....

Gussie girl;=>....
Here you go again....
You think we are stupid ????
I see thru that phony facade you put up...

Quote
i'm a laser tech supervisor

DOUBTFUL....VERY DOUBTFUL !!!!...

Quote
be careful not to overtorque the screws or it will affect the optics)

DarkXPSX , he STILL thinks there is laser technology in his older Philips Projection TV...
I don't think that lasers even existed back then !!!!....
DON'T let him scare you with that "optics" crap....
ANY TV tech that worked(s) on projection TVs will tell you that that is just bull....
PLEASE ignore that as a garbage statement.....
Just tighten the screws up nice & tight & you'll be OK !!!!...(Not to say overtighten them..)

SPECIAL for you Gussie girl;=>...

Blue Blur On Screen [In reply to] Can't Post

I didn't plan on adding baby oil, I prefer doing things the right way the first time.

I have ordered a bottle of coolant and it is on it's way. I will probably try to change it this Saturday so long as I get it by then.

I will keep you updated whenever I can.

And thank you guys.

Are you SURE ONE bottle is going to be enough ????
When the Blue is bad , 99.99% of the time , the green IS bad also ....
The bottles that I used had slightly more than what you need for ONLY ONE CRT....
I strongly suggest you take a look thru the lens of the green CRT with video on it to see if its also cloudy...

Blue Blur On Screen [In reply to] Can't Post

I got the coolant and installed (Would that be the correct word to use? lol) it into the chamber. That fixed the the problem. Now the box that the channel number and AV/DVI show up in is actually blue like it is suppose the be.
I did end up ordering a second bottle for the green, it was also getting fuzzy, but not as bad as the blue. Once I replaced the colant for the green and reinstalled the tub, I used the Red/Blue convergence settings in the menu to align the image. The image looked very clear afterwards. I have not had a chance to sit down and watch anything or play any games though. I just turned on my PS3 and left it in the XMB menu to see how the imaged looked from there.
The only other thing that I believe that I need to do is go through the Multi-Point Convergence. I also plan to clean the screen and mirror with some LCD Cleaner and a micro-fiber cloth.
I do believe that I will have to repace the Convex Lens (I believe that is what it was called.) for both the green and blue. There was something on the lens that did not want to come off and I was afraid to use anything that might scratch the lens.
Any other tips for me?
Once again, thanks for the help guys.

DarkXPSX;.....

I just love it when somebody goes headlong into something they know little about thinking they will overcome all problems...
Now that the horse is outta the barn , let's see if we can get you back to reality....
That discoloration on the lens usually can be removed with Windex or the equivalent & a clean cotton diaper or "T" shirt...
Do NOT rub too hard as you can dull the finish on the lenses & get a blurred area in the pix....
Those lenses are made from a clear acrylic polymer plastic & NOT glass...
I believe a micro-fiber cloth may scratch the lenses , so I reccommend you do NOT use that....

Since that is on the INSIDE , have fun removing the coolant & lens assembly to do that...

Clean the mirror with the Windex & diaper or a "T" shirt....
If it is a soft mylar mirror , use care & do not rub hard , it will scratch....
Do NOT , I repeat , DO NOT clean the screen with ANYTHING !!!!!!
There is a special coating on there that if you clean it off , kiss any chance of a good pix goodbye....PERIOD !!!!
99.99999% of the time they do NOT need cleaning & from what you said ("The image looked very clear afterwards.") it doesn't need a cleaning....
