I cant connect my pc to tv

Hi All,
I have a samsong tv which i like to connect to my pc which is running on a windows7 platform, i have tried two cables of hdmi- dvi & hdmi- avg to set tv as my second monitor. It didnt work, though and neither tv recognised the input cable nor the laptop detect any additional monitor.
I have seen lots of tutorials in the net which all are about connecting cable and make some changes in the display setting of windows. I followed accordingly and didnt get any result.
Is there anything wrong with the windows or cable or tv?
Anybody knows what should i do.
