Mitsubishi VS-6051 Picture problem please help :)

Hello everyone,
I have a Mitsubishi VS-6051 rear projection TV. Recently something crazy has been happening to the picture. The menus screen works fine, the sound works fine, but if there is no menu-type display on the tv a black box covers about 80% of the screen. But as soon as I adjust the volume and the volume display shows up you can see the entire picture, the same goes for any type of menu display. But the normal picture alone gets blocked by a big black square as soon as a menu-display type item is not on the screen.
I am pretty new at TV repair but I want to try to fix it on my own. Does anyone know what might be happening here with my TV? Thanks for any help!!
