Panasonic PT-51HX41E issues Can't Post

I just got a Panasonic PT-51HX41E that my brother in law was going to trash. The set works but as he says has slowly lost picture quality. I plugged it in and played a DVD to see the picture. The alignment is good but the color seems gone. Like it is black and white. On the menu screen the blues are dominant and when the pause button is applied on the DVD player the pause icon appears near the top right corner. The icon is yellow in color but a blue haze shows near it like a shadow. Over all it appears to have the blue haze through out. Can anyone out there give me a diagnoses and repair plan, maybe a repair price. Thanks. I can also send pictures to anyone.

I have the TV in my garage and only can hook up a DVD player for now. I opened the back of the unit and took some pictures. One will be with the blue (I guess it's called a crt) covered and one with out it covered. If I can figure out how to post an image. Forgive me too because I am just a novice at this.

I have no experience in electronics. I have repaired my own Vizio twice but that was to only unplug a board and replace with another. I have the capability to do a lot of repairs on my own and have done so with (instruction) many broken things at my house. I figured if this TV can be repaired for a reasonable price I might give it a whirl.

Don't get your hopes up tho , it could be....

I have no experience in electronics.

That may be a problem....However , I'll try to help you as best as I can...

You will need to remove the back cover to try to fix this &
the front cover to make a visual check.....
Will that be a problem for you ???
I have to download the service manual for this set...
(I'm on dial-up , so it takes forrrreeeevvveeerrr...)
I will get back to you later....

From what I see in your pix , the color IS there....

In the pix below;=>...

You have red , orange etc...
Just that the blue is messed up....

In the pix below;=>....

With the exception of the blue missing , color looks like its there...
Just might need to be turned up a bit...

BTW;...
GREAT pix....THANKS....Sly....
You CAN put more than 1 pix in a post....
You could actually put 100 of them IF admin would let you....

I have the back (wood) cover off at this time. I can see the blue, green and red crt and the bottom mother board. Do you mean the large black plastic backing. I will be able to remove them. The manual says to remove the speaker covers etc. to get the front off. Let me know if I need to remove the entire back. Thanks again.

likeadodachacha;....

Got the manual....Took 30~45 mins to download...
The first thing we/you need to do is remove the front screen assembly...
Start by removing the right & left side speaker grille covers....
They should be held on by velcro pads & should just pop off...
Use CARE....
That leaves the center front cover....
That has 4 screws...
Remove the 4 screws....
Set the cover aside...
Now there are 2 screws holding the keyboard...
One on each side...
Remove those 2 & let the keyboard gently hang down...
Then you have the 51" screen to remove...
According to the manual , there's a screw on the bottom far right side & one
on the bottom far left side that has to be removed...
After you get those 2 screws out be careful as the screen is now free...
Now the manual does NOT show how to remove the unattached
screen from the cabinet...
Try to gently lift straight up the screen assembly from the bottom holding on to the sides...
It may just slide up & off...
The other way would be to pull gently from the bottom away from the cabinet & swing it out & up & off...
Again use CARE & hold it so you do NOT lose control & break it....
After you get the screen off the cabinet , set it aside lean it up against a wall so it is
in a safe location in a safe position...
Remember how it came off so you can put it back on without any glitches...

Now turn the TV on...
Have the DVD player hooked up & on...
You are going to look down into each CRT for a pix....
The CRTs WILL be bright...
First look into the red CRT .....
Kinda creep up on it & allow time for your eyes to adjust to the brightness....
Notice how bright & clear the pix is.....
Now go to the green CRT & check the pix there....
That one should also be bright & clear...
Now check the blue CRT...
In that one you should see a pix , but it should be blurry...
Now here's the problem...
There are 2 reasons for that pix being blurry..
One is the focus is out...(Adjustment usually takes care of that).....
The other is bad CRT coolant....
Somehow you are going to have to figure out IF it is vthe coolant OR an adjustment...

FYI;...
ALL CRT projection TVs have CRT coolant...
It is used to keep the CRTs from cracking the faceglass
because of excessive heat that builds up while its on...
It is in between the CRT face & the lens in a compartment...
Over time on some brands this coolant was contaminated during manufacture & became cloudy....
You will need to determine whether the bad blue pix is ON the CRT face OR is due to bad coolant...
Without seeing it , it's impossible for me to say....
There's no pix yet that I've seen here that conclusively proves one way or the other the CRT
coolant is good or bad...
They just don't come out clear enough to determine....

Your call....

Post results....

WARNING !!!!
While I was preparing this post I noticed you jumped the gun....
I do not tolerate that well especially since you did the WRONG thing...
Put the back cover BACK ON !!!!
We are going to do things from the front...
PLEASE follow my suggestions & instructions TO the letter OR you can mess
up the TV & ME !!!!
IF you do not understand my instructions STOP , POST & I WILL reply ASAP...
Be patient & we'll git er dun rite !!!...Wink....

Alright I checked out the red, green and blue as you said. They all appear to be the same. The blue might be a very very little hazey. What I could tell was the most different was when I paused the DVD on a good picture of a persons face, at times the blue would be dark on part of the face while the green and red were bright. Like if there was blood on the face I wouldn't be able to see it on the blue crt because of the darkness.

Well even though I know how you love it Ron I went and jumpped ahead and used the electrical focus controls as listed on page 16 of the manual. That did the trick and I was able to adjust the sceen until the blue dissapeared. It looks like I just have to use the menu to adjust the final picture quality and it should be good. I really appreciate the advise and your time, though you really need to chill out alittle bit. Thanks again.

After messing with it some more I adjusted the electrical focus controls but the blue has to be turned down so far (to get the blue blurr out) that I think it interferes with the quality of the picture. Especially when I connect my daughters Wii.

Re: [likeadodachacha] Panasonic PT-51HX41E issues [In reply to] Can't Post

Update....I continued to look at different repair posts on line and decided to replace the STK392-150 convergence chips that were already installed in the tv. I did that and also discovered resistor R7056 which is a 2.2 ohm @ 2 watt metal film resistor burnt out. Mined you I have little soldering or electronics experience. I desoldered the parts and soldered in the new ones I got off line. The tv didn't come with a remote so I bought one online at EBAY. I replaced the parts and then had to do some adjusting with the blue crt to get everything in line. The tv is like brand new now and with parts and remote I'm into it for about $70.00. I'm not really sure I had to replace the convergence chips because the same problem I had before still existed. I put up the convergence screen and slowly adjusted the blue crt by hand until I had a good alignment. I will post some new pics.

There you have it Ron M. the TV is fixed and done without your complete assistance. There are plenty of other people out there that can help you fix something without having to deal with an arrogant a@$ hole like you. If anyone out there would like help with the same repair I hope this helps. All I can tell you is continue to search online and you will find the answer. Good luck. Bye Ron.

The bad resisotr is directly in front of the 9 in the STK392-150 chip. You can see the discoloration (brown color) in the R7056 resistor.
