Phillips 50 inch crt coolant removal Can't Post

I have a 2001 50 inch phillips projection tv. The picture is more red than it should be. After reading the TV forums and reading through I purchased some CRT cooling fluid and I am ready to change it my question is what area do I remove to get to the fluid area so I do not spill it everywhere? I have added to images that show the thre crt's and 1 close up. Please let me know which 4 screws need to be removed so I don't remove the wrong ones. Thank You in Advance for Your HelpSmile Well Tried to add images but it is not working I can email them you Please Help!

badgereye;....

IF you can copy & paste you can post pix here...
You might have to upload the pix to either http://register.photobucket.com/step1 OR http://imageshack.us/ ....

They're both free & easy to use....
Just upload the pix you want , then copy & paste them here...
I'll give you detailed info IF you need it....
I can modify the pix , re-post them & help you out....
Please post a model & chassis (Either a PTV??? OR DPTV) number &
I may be able to post pix if I have the manual for your TV....

The coolant IS VERY corrosive to circuit boards & the
components , so you MUST avoid a spill at ALL costs...

GOOD LUCK....Sly....

Re: [Ron.M] Phillips 50 inch crt coolant removal [In reply to] Can't Post

The model number of the phillips 50 inch is 50P8431 I am sure the fluid needs to be changed after taking the front off. I just want to make sure I know exactly how to get to the fluid without spilling it. Anyone got a service manual?
I have pictures located here. http://s885.photobucket.com/...rrent=crt3Medium.jpg

Re: [badgereye] Phillips 50 inch crt coolant removal [In reply to] Can't Post

badgereye;.....

Let's start with this;=>....

"""Please post a model & chassis >>(Either a PTV??? OR DPTV) number<<<"""
NEED to verify that the Chassis (DPTV#) IS DPTV465 !!!!! ...

IF you think that the service manual is going to help you with instructions for
changeing the coolant , well , maybe !!!!...Unsure....
There are NO pix in the manuals for you...Unsure...
There are detailed steps for EXPERIENCED TECH's ONLY !!!!...
Which begs the question;=>...
"""How much electronic/TV repair background experience do you have ????"""
PLEASE give me an HONEST answer....THANKS....
I STRONGLY reccommend you remove each CRT from the set to change the coolant...
You WILL wind up doing a better & safer job with NO risk of accidental spillage...
The coolant is HIGHLY corrosive & TOXIC !!!...That means it's POISON....Pirate
Do ONE at a time...

I've modified one of your pix....

The RED circles are screws (There are 4 of them , two on the front & 2 on the back)
you do NOT want to mess with....
IF you do , you WILL have coolant running all over the place....
The green arrows are for screws that hold the lens assemblies....
They're 1/4 inch nutdriver screws...
There are 4 of them...
You'll need to take the lens assembly off to clean both of the lenses...
Use ONLY Windex type window cleaner & SOFT cotton
T-Shirts or CLEAN cotton diapers....
You can use Windex & the T-Shirts to clean the inside of the coolant
chambers & CRT faces also...
On those assemblies there is a fairly large wing nut....
Be SURE it is TIGHT BEFORE you remove the lens assembly....
Also note which direction the wing nut is faceing so when you put it
back on , you'll have it in the right direction in the event you need to adjust it....

To verify your coolant is bad , do the following;=>...

While you have the screen off the TV , turn it on...
Look directly first into the red CRT lens assembly at the face of the tube where the picture should be....
Kinda creep up on it as the pix WILL be bright & you need time for your eyes to adjust...
You should see a clear , sharp & focused picture....
Next , look into the green CRT lens assembly....
There you "may" see a bit of contamination in the coolant....
You should see a picture there , but probably not as good as the red....
Now look into the blue CRT lens assembly....
I'll bet that one is a mess....Cloudy & a lot of junk in there...
A LOT of contamination & the pix will be hard to make out....
IF that is the case , then what you need is a coolant change...
IF they are fairly clear pix on ALL 3 CRTs , then you may have a different problem....

This should get you started....If you need ANYTHING else , just post....

IF you so choose , I wish you & your family a Very Happy Easter....

Re: [Ron.M] Phillips 50 inch crt coolant removal [In reply to] Can't Post

In answer to your question Ron, I have 13 years experience in the cctv and video security sytems integration field. I downloaded a pdf file from crawfishy on page 1 of a 2005 tv forum on how to change the crt fluid. His post spoke of using a turky baster and tube to remove the fluid from the chamber. He spoke of a 5/8 inch hole where you can remove the fluid so if I take the four star screws off and remove the assembly then you are sure no fluid will leak? Will I then see the hole to acces the fluid using the tube and turkey baster? Thanks for your help in advance .

badgereye;.....

SORRY about the delay , but I had fun...Crazy.... getting the pix up & running below.....Wink....

One last time;=>...""""""Please post a model & chassis >>(Either a PTV??? OR DPTV) number<<<"""
NEED to verify that the Chassis (DPTV#) IS DPTV465 !!!!! ...
Thanks for the model #...I NEED also the DPTV # .....

"""I downloaded a pdf file from crawfishy on page 1 of a 2005 tv forum on how to change the crt fluid. His post spoke of using a turky baster and tube to remove the fluid from the chamber."""
I saw & read that file....I actually shuddered when I read to use a "Turkey Baster" to get the fluid out....
That method is DANGEROUS , & risky....
I do NOT reccommend you OR anyone else use it....
The 5/8" hole may be too small to get the baster in far enough to remove all the fluid , etc....
That IS one reason why I insist on removing the CRT assembly to drain the fluid out....
It IS FAR SAFER with NO risk of spillage on to circuit boards...

""""if I take the four star screws off and remove the assembly then you are sure no fluid will leak?"""
IF you remove the 4 screws I show with the blueish arrows , NO fluid will leak...You more than likely will need to remove those screws to clean the lenses...
After a few years , dust , smoke film (IF you are a smoker) builds up & causes pix deterioration....
So as long as you're in there , you might as well clean those lenses....

""""Will I then see the hole to acces the fluid using the tube and turkey baster?"""
Absolutely NO !!!...
See pix below;=>...

The above looks similar to what you have.....
The Red arrow points to the expansion "bladder"....
Do NOT loosen OR remove screws from this part....
The Greenish arrow points to the coolanl fill/drain ....
This is a twist off cap....
Under it sometimes comes a black gromet/ring....
Do NOT lose that ring...
IF it stays in the hole you removed the cap from ,
remove it so you don't lose it....
Obviously you need it to seal the hole after you
change the fluid or you WILL have a leak....
As you can see , the drain/fill is on the side of the CRT assembly....
So the best way is to remove the CRT , set it on it's side to drain & fill it....
NOT that big a deal....

This next pix is a blow-up so you can see the parts involved more clearly....

Have fun & GOOD LUCK....Sly.....

Thanks allot for the pics this will definitely help! So if I take out the whole CRT does the bottom glass tube also come out or will that stay inside the TV?

Re: [badgereye] Phillips 50 inch crt coolant removal [In reply to] Can't Post

badgereye;.....

The WHOLE assembly , the tube & ALL that you see in the pix comes out....
Do NOT remove the yoke etc from the CRT...
Disconnect the cable(s) from where it goes to....
Leave ALL electronic parts that are around the neck of the CRT ON the CRT....
You have some wires/cables to disconnect & screws to remove & a small module at
the bottom of the CRT to remove....
Do NOT disconnect the HV wire (The heavy red wire that connects on the side near
the top of the CRT) from the top side of the CRT.....
That wire has silicone sealant that is cured & unless you want a problem , do NOT take it off there...
Follow the wire to a distribution block & disconnect it there....
Also wait a day or so to allow the HV & other voltages to dissipate to a safe level so you do not get a shock....
Do ONE tube at a time !!!
Do not forget to remove the lenses to clean out the fluid cavity after you drained the fluid out....
Use Windex & soft cotton T-Shirts or cotton diapers to clean the cavity & inside the lenses....
Rinse & dry well....

Re: [Ron.M] Phillips 50 inch crt coolant removal [In reply to] Can't Post

As you stated taking the whole crt out is the safest option. On the lens assembly the four screws are like torx bolts or star bolts do you know the size is it a 6 torx? Because a 1/4 inch star socket looks to big as is a 1/4 inch socket.
