Pioneer - How to CLEAN lens? Can't Post

I own a Pioneer SD-P50A3 tv. The service manual, http://www.mediafire.com/...0Projection%20TV.pdf, is lacking in details so I'll ask here.

The display is fuzzy and improper color. Running thru the OSD to converge and such arent helping. My guess is to clean any dust on the inside screen and lens. How would i go about opening the unit so that i may clean both areas safetly?

Would you recommend rubbing alcohol and face cloth to clean both?

quantass;....

I am on dial-up & it took me over an hour to download your service manual....

So I'm guessing you have reading problems....
IF you go to page 129 (The real page 129) item #7.2.1 & 7.2.2 you'll see how to remove the screen to clean the lenses & mirror....
Do NOT remove the mirror or lenses !!!
Do NOT use rubbing alcohol to clean them....
My reccommendation is to get some Windex or similar window cleaner....
Spray a SOFT cotton towel or diaper , then wipe the lenses & mirror....
EDIT:...
While you have the screen off , turn the TV on & SLOWLY look into each lens & see if the pix & coolant are CLEAR & in FOCUS ...
If not , post back....

Good Luck.....

Reading Problems.....I think you're right! Actually, i think they call it Impatience.

Much appreciated Ron. I will follow the steps and cross my fingers for no unexpected hiccups. I'll get back with the details.

To be clear: once i remove the screen I will use Windex to clean all 3 color lens and mirror (which is attached to the back panel). When you say "pix" and "coolant" where are these located? The PDF document is not searchable

When you have the screen off the TV & turn it on , you'll see the lenses light up...
There will be one that is red , one green (the center one) & one blue....
You will need to stick your head inside the TV & look directly into the lens where the light comes from....
Do this SLOWLY to allow time for your eyes to adjust to the brightness....
So kinda creep up on it....
As you do this you'll see a picture in the bottom of the lens assembly....
Each one MUST be CLEAR & in FOCUS ....
The pix will be on the face of each CRT....
The coolant is the liquid that's between the CRT face & the lens...
You shouldn't have any trouble distinguishing between the two....
If the pix is bad , you'll see it ON the face of the CRT....
If the coolant is bad , you'll see a cloudyness in between....
I'm not sure if your mirror is made of glass or a vynal sheet....
IF it's a vynal sheet , use care & do NOT rub it with ANY hard pressure...
Wipe it VERY lightly & gently....
AND , do not be concerned with any streaks....
You won't see them in the pix...

Good Luck.....

Re: [Ron.M] Pioneer - How to CLEAN lens? [In reply to] Can't Post

Hi Ron.

Ok I finally inspected and cleaned the Pioneer Projector TV. There was dust on the lens and mirror. After cleaning those i peered down thru the lens as u stated to see the CRT face and coolant. The CRT face image was viewable but didnt appear perfect -- it seemed grainy / rough but maybe this is due to NTSC or cable signal?. The coolant itself appeared to have lots of debris floating in it as if someone blew dust within the liquid.

After the lens & mirror clean the image seems a bit better but I'm wondering if physical calibrating of the color lens (there is a wing nut in front that when loosened allow you to move the lens left-right), clean coolant, or tweak CRT image, could help improve the projection tv image more?

Thanks for any followup tips. Can the coolant be cleaned or CRT image improved?

When you say that the coolant ""appeared to have lots of debris floating in it as if someone blew dust within the liquid.""" , do you mean to say that the coolant is "cloudy" in appearance ???
DID all 3 CRTs look that way ???

IF you are in the US , ALL chans are NTSC & it's NOT the problem....
Your cable signal could be causing a grainy/snowy pix....
Was the pix in focus clearly on the CRT face ???
You should see very thin clear horizontal lines in the pix....Did you ???

I hope you didn't turn the lens in any direction...
& adjusting those is NOT needed unless you change the CRTs themselves....
Make sure those wingnuts are tight & did NOT move....

I know you have the service manual....
A STRONG piece of advice;....
Do NOT go into the factory menu for ANY reason without expert guidance...
You can adjust the wrong thing & NEVER get it back the way it should be....
Do NOT adjust Factory menu Convergence adjustments...NEVER NEVER NEVER !!!!
Do NOT tinker with ANYTHING before asking what you want to tinker with...
You can screw it up big time...ASK FIRST....

Can the coolant be cleaned or CRT image improved?

NO , IF bad , it HAS to be replaced...
Which brings us to this...
Based on what I've read here , I think changeing the CRT coolant "may" be beyond your expertise.....Is it ???

One more thing to check;
The convergence....
Are the colors lined up where they should be ???
Do you see red , green or blue outlines around the images or wording ???
A good way to see that quickly is to bring up the menu & check the graphics for a 3D type screen....

Please answer all my questions....

Let me know the results....THANKS.....

Re: [Ron.M] Pioneer - How to CLEAN lens? [In reply to] Can't Post

The coolant appears to have many small specks with in it as if there is alot of dust in there. Cloudy to me makes me think uniform white-ish / opaque, which it is not. A;; 3 CRT coolants looked the same.

The pix appeared to be in focus on the crt face. I could see horizontal lines.

The convergence appeared to line up acceptably well.

That's good....Now can you see the lines in the pix onscreen ???

Do you still have ???;=>...

IF the pix is still fuzzy , can you take & post pix ????

I'm reffering to your cable signal....Do you have a VCR or a DVD player you can hook up to the TV...
If so hook one up & see if the pix is clear or ???.....
Post results....THANKS....Sly
& a further explanation of what you mean by "improper color" would help....

The coolant itself appeared to have lots of debris floating in it as if someone blew dust within the liquid.

Without seeing this firsthand , since all 3 CRT coolants looked the same , we could guess all day as to whether or not this is OK....
The only way to get a definitive answer would be to have a good reputable TV tech come over & take a look for himself....Your call....

GOOD LUCK....Sly......
