Rear Projection TV 50", Widescreen question

Hello,
I have a 3 year old 50" Projection TV. I know all of the new TV's are Widescreen, but when I rent a DVD movie it always plays in Letterbox or widescreen mode. Is there any way I can change that, or is that how it's going to be with all of the TV's becoming widescreen?
