dead tv Can't Post

So I was reading a post on here about changing the coolant in my crts and there was a link to detailed step by step instructions with pictures. It said to take apart the back of the tv, turn the color to the lowest setting and look into the crts to see if it was fuzzy. Problem is, I took off the back of the tv and now I don't get anything out of the crts. The power light comes on and I hear it turn on and two seconds later I hear it power something down but the green power light stays on. Do I continue with changing the coolant or do I now have a bigger problem? Please help.
The tv is a Phillips Magnavox

Does it even use CRT's?

Could be a DLP set - You don't even give us a model number we can use to research.Unimpressed

Reassemble it to how it was when you started and see if starts to work again.

that did the trick, although the picture was a little distorted around the edges. I am now going to attempt the coolant change. Thank you for the help

blang619;....

Just a FYI;....
Distortion around the edges suggests another problem.....
Bad coolant does NOT usually pick on selected areas of the pix.....
It messes up the whole pix...

Good Luck....

Have fun with your coolant change....Wink.....

You are right Ron.
I did change the coolant as it needed to be done, but there is something else wrong with the set. The picture shrinks in about 1/3 the size, then expands back out. I read that this is a fairly common problem for this model. Any ideas? I know there is a repair kit for this problem from tvrepairkits.com but I am looking for some info as to what causes it and how to fix it. I like to learn, what can I say?
I will probably go ahead and order that kit, as when then picture is full size it looks great.
Oh and thanks to all who posted about coolant change, it made the process a piece of cake.

BEFORE you go & order something that "may" not be the right parts.....
There are more than a few possible causes for problems like this.....
Is the pix shrinking from top to bottom OR from the sides ???
IF its on the sides , is the shrunk area straight up & down OR curved ???..
Can you post pix if needed ???....
How much electronic/TV repair background experience do you have ????...

A side note;=>....

Re: [Ron.M] dead tv [In reply to] Can't Post

Ron,
The picture shrinks an even amount on the top to bottom AND side to side. Its as if it zooms in and out, but when it zooms in the picture shrinks.
I tried to take a picture of it but now I don't get any picture at all Pirate
I found this link which "seems" to describe my problem
http://www.tvrepairkits.com/xcart/home.php?cat=3763

I have a degree in automotive electronics and have been a commercial electrician for the last 15 years but no actual "tv repair" experience.

The "coolant change" posts were not by me, rather posts on this web site I have read.

Any help you could give would be greatly appreciated.

OK....Here's the problem.....
I'm not there & you're not here....

"IF" , the pix is straight & level across the screen from left to right & straight up & down on the sides , then you do NOT have a convergence problem....
As this link takes me to replacement ICs for convergence....
http://www.tvrepairkits.com/xcart/home.php?cat=3763
You would be wasting your time & money on parts that would NOT fix the TV....
Not to be a smart @$$ , but , it's your money & how you spend it won't hurt me a bit....Wink....

Typical convergence problems have the following symptoms;=>....

  • Screen looks 3D
  • Colors don't line up
  • One or more colors can't be adjusted when using the convergence menu.
  • Screen is bowed or warped.
You didn't mention any of that !!!!...
Go here & see if anything looks like what the pix did when it was shrunk in;=>....
http://calgary.convergencerepair.com/gallery.asp
Click around the assorted pix & see if anything looks like your set did.....

More reason for me to suspect something else....
From what you are describing to me , it appears to be a power supply problem & NOT a convergence problem.....

If you are in the USA;.....

Have a safe Memorial Day......Sly.....

If not , Happy Sunday.....Wink....

Re: [Ron.M] dead tv [In reply to] Can't Post

Ron,

First let me thank you again for your time.

Secondly, there is a more direct web address for what I was reading, it is here.
http://www.tvrepairkits.com/...;cat=3763&page=1

Thirdly, my picture is NOT bowed like the picture you have in your last post. My picture is much straighter and shrinks on all four sides nearly equally. Also none of the pics on the link you posted looked like my tv.

As a side symptom, when I power the tv up I hear a quiet "chirp" followed by a second "chirp" a couple of seconds later. Not sure if this means anything or not but thought I should include this. I did not hear the second chirp when I had a picture, but then I wasn't listening for one either.

Also I do NOT like to waste $$$$ on anything, so I appreciate your expertise and not letting me spend money on something that may not solve my problem.

ps I am in America and a proud American and I wish you a happy Memorial day as well!

Ok , we both agree that convergence is not the issue....
Maybe....Crazy....

Glad you mentioned this info.....It has obviously gotten worse...

See next quote from the tvrepairkits link you gave;=>...

Note #2: If your Tv is making a chirping sound this is not the correct repair kit. Get the chirping TV repair kit for that problem instead.

This indicates that that link isn't for the right part(s) either....

Now we have some more confusion !!!....Unsure....
The chirping sound (According to repairkits & my own experience) could be convergence ICs....
However you do NOT have the bowing , 3-D effect OR any other symptoms of bad convergence ICs...(i.e. Alignment issues)...

My best advice would be to contact directly repairkits thru their Live chat or email....
Give them accurate info about the pix being converged OK & it's shrinking , now dead problem....
See what they say....(My gut feeling is its a power supply problem...)....Wink...

GOOD LUCK.....Sly....

Let me/us know what you find out...OK ...THANKS....
