hitachi picture in picture is randomly popping up all over

big screen hitachi ultra vision rear projection tv model 53sbx59b mfg 1999, the problem is i`m getting a picture in picture randomly popping up everywhere it pops up all over the screen sometimes it` several small boxes like a grid of pip`s then it will be fine for a few minutes then do it again and every now and then the whole screen will go black then come back fine then go back to pip`s bouncing everywhere. the pip is off ,,it` like the whole picture screen is going crazy,,so this makes no sense,,got to say i have been lucky though,a 14 yr old tv and this just started a cpl months ago, when this pip is not going crazy the picture is still beautiful crisp and clear. so I hate to get rid of it,,any help would be appreciated thanks
