LG Plasma - Flickering Highlight Weirdness?

Hi All
I have an LG Plasma, unfortunately not sure of model name (and it is mounted on wall so not easy to see). It is a 60" unit, THX certified, approx 4 years old.
I noticed about a month and a half ago that the highlights in the picture would often flicker, the brightest white portions might come and go a little, well I went on holiday for a month and now I came back it has gotten much worse. Brighter portions of the picture become a crazy rainbow effect.
I am going to get a picture up to show this but the problem is definitely within the TV - if I go into the menu and change the settings for brightness, contrast or gamma the problem area moves around on a freeze-frame. Darker areas of the picture are totally unaffected. The TV's own menu is affected.
Is this possibly fixable, or is the screen on its way out?
