SONY KDL-40X2000 OSD and other issues

Symptoms:
1 a few weeks ago, the channel info stopped appearing.
At the same time the OSD menu stopped appearing when the relevant button on the remote was pressed.
Also, the menu button on the tv stopped working.
2 More recently, after the TV has been on for a while, all buttons on the remote stop working.
At the same time, the power and eg volume buttons on the tv stop working.
Cycling the power fixes this second symptom temporarily.
I have swapped the mainboard but this made no difference.
I've seen elsewhere that sometimes the buttons unit can cause this so I will try swapping that next.
But am I on the wrong track?
Any help much appreciated.
