Sound stops working on adjustment

I have a Vizio SV470M with a sound adjustment issue. It works fine when turned on and you can usually make 1 or 2 adjustments, but at some point it just completely goes Mute. No "Mute" indicator on the screen and always happens when turning the volume up or down. On turning off and back on, it resolves itself again until a few adjustments later.
Any thoughts? Would a new Main Board resolve this one?
