Help Please - Sony Betamax HF100

I was hoping someone with some technical knowledge could assist me with a repair to a Sony Betamax HF100.
When i put a tape in, it loads no problem. It can FF and Rew no problem but when i press play it whirs for a second and stops. If i press FF or Rew while its in play mode it will do an onscreen FF etc.
What do you think could be the issue?
