Mits. HS-U748 brake engaging - RW and FF Can't Post

Hi all, anybody heard of this before? The machine I bought used seems very good, but it has this one issue.

When rewinding or fast-forwarding a typical 2-hour tape,
it seems as if a brake momentarily engages (about 1/2
second ) and the tape slows down, then builds back uo
to full speed . It does this twice during a full RW or FF.

I timed it, assuming approx. 45 seconds for full RW/FF,
it brakes at about 7 seconds, and again at 12 seconds.
The rest of the operation is normal. The tape is not
damaged.

Thanks for any suggestions.

From Owner's Manual:

REWIND TIME: approx. 43 seconds for T-120 cassette (full recorded tape)

Yes, the total time is not affected. But the brake engages twice,
if you rewind with the top off the machine, you can see the motor to the right of the rotating head
partially engage the brake mechanism enough that you can hear/see it slow down.

It's not a biggie, just wondering why it's doing it.
There is a video on youtube of some guy with the exact same VCR doing the rewind to show
how fast it is - no similar braking on his machine.

I made an audio file to illustrate what I'm hearing.
You can hear the sounds at 5 and 11 seconds . (Any other pops and clicks are just ambient
noises picked up from the microphone)

As I mentioned earlier, this noise seems to be the break partially engaging for a split second.

It makes this noise, in approx. the same place, during a full RW/FF of ANY 2-hour tape

replying to my own post again, but I've an update.

Right in the middle of playing a tape, the tape stopped and the picture
reverted to the incoming (line 1) signal - just as if I'd stopped the tape.

I thought the tape had reached the end; it was a tape I hadn't looked at for years.
I just assumed the recording was chopped off right there. I got the tape out, and to my surprise,
some of the tape was outside of the tape shell.

I opened it up to see what was happening. The head is spinning but the spools aren't
moving the tape. I'm going to take it to a place to see if can be fixed.

I took the plunge and had the Mistubishi fixed.

Paid $125 to have it opened up, belt and clutch replaced, cleaned, lubed, etc, etc.

It's working a little solidly than before; the breaking noise I hear during the high speed
RW or FF is still there, but seems less. The repair guy said it's nothing to worry about,
nothing in the mechanics he could see that would cause it, and that something in the electronics was
triggering it.
