Sounds like the most likely source of the squeak would be the reels - remove their retaining rings, pull them off and shoot a drop or two of OIL onto the spindles (not WD-40, as it's too light of a lubricant). Be sure not to lose any of the spacer washers under the reels; they are there to set the correct height of the tape cartridge reels which is extremely critical. Could also be coming from the capstan if the squeak only occurs in Play mode - or many other places too. To lube the capstan, lift up the oil-retaining plastic washer a quarter inch, apply one drop of oil around the capstan shaft, then push the washer back down. Make sure to use alcohol or acetone to remove any oil above the washer, or you're looking at damaging the first few tapes played after this operation. . . .
