VCR "moaning" noise

VCR "moaning" noise Can't Post
Good morning,
I've got two vcrs, one an old Quasar VHQ730 and a 2 yr. old Emerson EWV404, that both make this low moaning noise. The Emerson is the one I'm concerned with right now. I realize this thing is just throw-away Funai junk, but I'd still like to correct this.
It moans when in either play or record mode and ONLY in SLP speed. While it's recording you can turn the moan on and off by changing the speed from slp to sp back and forth. It sounds like a dry rubber grommet type of "moan". I cleaned the rubber roller and lubed it's spindle; no help. The noise sounds further down anyway. Turning the machine on it's side or upside down while recording or giving the tape some slack makes no difference either. Used several tapes and the noise remains the same.
Any help will be greatly appreciated.

The area the rubber roller contacts on the spindle (Capstan) should NOT be lubed.

Have you tried running with a "Dummy Tape?"

Yes, I've tried many different tapes; new blank tapes, old tapes, small hub, large hub. No difference in the noise with any of them. So the tape itself can be ruled out. I have a bunch of these Funai's around here and no "moan" from any of the others.

I've been looking for a dummy tape on e-Bay, etc. No luck so far but but I have a couple more ideas for sources.
