II have replaced C502 and D501. No change, I still have video and sound but that buzz coming from the VR is still there. The IC is going to take a little loner but I'll be back to you.

All of the replacements have been installed with no difference in performance.

My bad. Pictures sure 'looked' like a vertical problem to me.

You said at the beginning that the regulator itself was where the buzzing was coming from... Let's try coming at it from that angle.
Have you checked the regulator's input and output voltages? Filter capacitors?

Re: [jts1957] Buzzing Voltage Regulator [In reply to] Can't Post

The buzzing is absolutely coming from the voltage reg. I put the set on and had a piece of hose to my ear and there is no question in my mind that that item is buzzing, loud too. I am not inclined to do any live testing. You know, this item is so cheap, I will just replace it and eliminate it as a problem. The only problem is finding the damned thing here where I live. These people didn't make it all the way out of the cave yet. I had the other components shipped in from Tennessee. Any suggestions about souring, or is that permitted?

I've had people take long insulated wires and solder them to any convenient point along the foil path of solder joints that has the voltage to be measured and feed the other ends to the outside, taping them down safely apart from each other. It would be well advised to have them labeled.Wink

I was looking at the pics I posted and I don't see where I gave a shot of the area around where the voltage regulator goes into the board. There is a dark area on the board on the component side and on the foil side as well. It might be significant. It's late here now so, I'll do it in the a.m.

STOP!

Let's IMMEDIATELY inspect your prior work.
I can definitely tell that you have C502 installed backwards. It has 'puffed' its top and probably been destroyed. NOTE the white band on the cap does NOT line up with the white dot. Many components have to be installed observing correct polarity. IC & Diode appear to be correctly installed, but can't really see other.

Do you have a means to at least check the value on caps? I do realize that each one you change does cost something (unless you've pulled them from a scrapped item, but then how would you know any of them are O.K.?).

C408 may have been overheated. There are three caps in STR circuit that could be checked: C483; C606 & C607.

Oh yeah. And Ron's probably having a conniption fit over picture sizes.Wink

Re: [jts1957] Buzzing Voltage Regulator [In reply to] Can't Post

First, I want to apologize for the size of the pics. I didn't realize they would be an issue. I will be more careful from now on. I tried to be very cautios about the orientation of installation. I marked the orientation of the board vs the side of the component and apparently I changed the board direction trying to find a more comfortable way to work. I will start over. I have a multi-meter and can check the R's with that but not a means to check the Caps. I will remove them and just replace them. I do not use any used material. The cost of these NEW products was pleasingly inexpensive and I will merely replace any of those part and probably will have to remove them to get the value.. I don't mind doing the work and will only get better at it. Thanks. I will be off for a while

You can go to imageshack, change the size of your pictures there, Ishack will give updated links to post back here.

Use edit button for your post with the too large pix, delete the old, paste in the new.

Re: [Ron.M] Buzzing Voltage Regulator [In reply to] Can't Post

Allow me to respond. First I suggest you go back and review the posts from your end and you will find that the pics, with the exception of the last 3, I sent were requested by Ron or jts1957. The original pics were 800x600 as instructed when I was given the ImageShack instructions., I already apologized for the oversize pics and deleted the post and resent them the proper size. The last three pics I posted were by my suggestion to show a scorched area on the board below the buzzing regulator in the hopes it would aid in finding the correct solution since all of the original suggestions failed. You know Ron for a guy who is apparently running the show, you seem to enjoy criticizing people who seek this kind of help and according to the implied use of the "F" word are ignoring your own rules. So, with that and because of my lack of knowledge in your field, I don't want to risk upsetting you any further and will not take this problem any further. Thanks for any help you have given me. Bob

VanBuren;....

With ALL due respect;....

I do NOT enjoy criticizing people !!!
There are times when some people need advice/correction on how a forum runs...
I do NOT & will NEVER run this or any other forum...
It MAY seem that way as I appear to be the only one who cares about how things are done..
MOST of my criticixms are constructive...

I went back & read ALL the posts prior to post #35...
NOWHERE did I see a request for CRT pix by either myself OR jts1957 !!!
So WHERE did I or jts1957 ask for those pix ???

I apparently underestimated your electronic ignorance...(NOT to be confused with stupid !!!)..
I presumed that you would know the difference between the "chassis & a CRT"...

The "F" in my comment stands for "Frigg" & not the one you are thinking of...
The power of suggestion is at work..
I do not cuss on this forum !!!...PERIOD !!!

I would like to make a suggestion...
I know that you said (post #54);..

Quote

Just to satisfy my curiousity...
There is a small transformer near the regulator that is more prone to the buzzing you are refering to...
that is T401..
Can you recheck that transformer by itself for any buzzing ???

Ron. You certainly come on strong like you are doing with your last post, and it gives the impression that it's your website. jts1957 gave me that same impression by delivering that you were upset by the size of the pics. I do know the difference between the CRT and the Chassis, so where did I present that I didn't know. Go to post #27 and you will see that I was asked for a pic of the yoke plug. I always thought the yoke was mounted on the neck of the CRT and that's what I took a pic of. . Frigg is not a curse, so you could have used it In closing, the voltage regulator is definitely buzzing and not the transformer.

VanBuren;...

Last post !!!...(I think !!)..

YESSSS , I DO get upset by the size of the pix...
So do most other readers & I suspect techs , when they have to scroll to another country just to see something on the far side of the post...
SCREWS UP the entire thread...
Notice how WWWWIIIIIDDDDEEE it is ???
Even regular posts are unnecessarily wide...
Had you posted SMALLER pix the thread would be MUCH easier to read...

Posts 23 & 27 have the SAME request...

Photo of FOIL side of pins of IC501? (LA7838 hopefully). Also yoke plug joints?

Solder ... NOT that other kind!

He wanted a pix of the Vertical IC FOIL side & a pix of the yoke plug "joints" FOIL SIDE also !!!
The yoke plug "joints" are NOT accessible for a pix on the CRT !!!
You took pix of the yoke CONNECTOR !!!

If post #35 of 72 third view down. If that is not the foil side of the yoke plug, what is it? Then the peeing contest is over,. The manual that you refer to was supposed to be SAMS 4147. SAMS wants $22 and I ran across a website, SCRIPD which had it listed for $8.00 and I too a shot. It turned out to be incomplete in that it didn't include the full list of capacitors. So, I informed them of that an got my money back. SAMS has two items listed under 4147 which are 148542 which is probably the chassis no. 2758000 and 148892 which is model no. DS27580.

SAMS does NOT include 'COMMON PARTS' that a repair shop is either likely to have on hand or are easily available through local Radio Shack, Fry's, etc.
You'll notice that the resistor list is a LITTLE shorter than it should be too.

Its here "Important Part Information": http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/xq90/905/RGRlp8.jpg
