No Picture on Philips 32PF7320A/37B Can't Post

Hello!

I have a brand new, 3 month old Philips 32PF7320A/37B LCD TV that doesn't work properly. I purchased the TV before moving, tested it and it worked fine, and now that I'm at my current location, the TV doesn't work. Crazy It will turn on, and the picture will come on and work fine, but then the screen will go blank. It's not turning off, because the sound works, and green power light is on. If you power cycle the TV it will return to normal, but usually will go blank again within a few seconds. The weird thing is that this doesn't happen all the time. Sometimes it takes hours to happen, other times seconds... I've heard about bad inverter boards and controller boards, think this could be it? How easy are they to find parts for and replace. ?

Thanks!

long story, but I don't have any local repair shops where I live, so the only option is to repair it myself by replacing components. So has anybody heard of this kind of problem? Is there a common fix?
First check all plugs and sockets which connect the boards together for loose connexions. If no luck then leave the back off and see if you can see the back lights in the back of the screen, then see if they go out when the fault occurs. If the back lights go out then the inverter, or worse, the front screen is faulty.Either way you are in for an expensive repair.its probably cheaper to drive the set back to where you bought it

All plugs and sockets are in place, and I've even pulled and reseated them to make sure. The backlight DOES stay on, but the screen still goes blank.

Taking the set back for warranty repair is out of the question. I live on a remote Island, and the only way off is via airplane. I have to do the part replacement / repair myself.

So what are my options?

you have few options if you are not a trained tech you could easily damage it beyond repair

if the back lights stay on you probably have a fault on the digital decoder board.I think you are asking for expensive trouble ordering boards that may not cure anything. this needs a proper diagnosis.why not invite a philips tech to your place for the weekend? Staten island isnt that remote is it?

Staten Island? I did grow up in Jersey! I guess I own an $800 non working display model... There's no way to invite a tech up here, the plane trip alone would cost $2500. I don't know what else to do... Are there any good books on LCD TV repair. I mean, if technicians can learn how to do it, why can't I? This isn't brain surgery...

to fault find you need a scope and digital multimeter at least. In your circumstances I suggest you order the digital processor and power supply boards and hope for the best.Even us seasoned techs rarely repair to component level on LCD or Plasma, its mostly replacement pcb's.Why not contact Philips technical, explain your position and see if, for once in their lives, they might be helpful and send you the boards under warranty

Re: [techchris] No Picture on Philips 32PF7320A/37B [In reply to] Can't Post

thanks... I appreciate the help, but philips is useless. They say that I have to deal with their Canada authorized service center, who is located in Quebec some 2000 miles away. I called their the technician, and he was helpful, but said that he couldn't do anything without me sending at least the chassis in. They did say that they would cover the return shipping costs, and I almost feel like sending it in out of principle so they can pay the $600 shipping costs... So who do I order the boards from? Is there an online source? I've found a couple online dealers of philips parts, but I don't know the part numbers.

I cant help with part numbers as I am in the UK and the set is not a European model. However I have searched the philips technical website and there is a software upgrade for this model. It does not say why but it may cure your problem.go to www.philips.com/support and follow the proceedure to find info on your model.select software upgrade file and download it .decompress the zip file and copy file "autorun.upg" to the root directory on a usb memory stick. turn off tv insert memory stick, switch on and tv will find the upgrade and download it.when finished switch tv off and remove memory stick and switch on.good luck.Have you tried philips on 1-888-744-5477

Re: [techchris] No Picture on Philips 32PF7320A/37B [In reply to] Can't Post

Thanks, but I've already upgraded the firmware and have called philips directly a ton of times. They've told me repeatedly that there is nothing they can do, and I have to call their canada service rep. The service rep is the one who says I have to send the TV in. The warranty terms do state that I am responsible for sending the TV in if there is a problem, and they will ship it back postage paid. I spoke direclty to the service technician, begging him for help, and asking about sending in specific boards or parts, but he said I'd have to send the whole TV in.

Update: After taking the entire TV apart, unplugging and replugging in every connection on every board, the TV started to work... however the problem still occurs, but now it happens after about 5-10 minutes, as opposed to every 10 seconds before. Does this shed light on anything?

try gently prodding the boards with a plastic insulated stick to see if the fault comes and goes.it may just be a bad solder joint somewhere.also it could be heat related in which case try electronic freezer spray when the fault is there, to see if the picture comes back when you spray a particular component.

This TV is such a piece of junk... I tried the prodding and blowing, and it didn't help. I then gave up and put the entire TV back together, turning it on one last time to try it... and it worked! All night long it worked perfectly. I turned it off before bed, and work up this morning and it doesn't work again. If I turn it on... the picture comes on for about 10 seconds, and goes off. Same old story.

Thanks Dave.... I appreciate the comments. I think I'm stuck, as I don't know what board to send in for repair, and Philips is completely useless. So In your guy's professional opinion, do you feel a name like Sony or Sharp would be better?

Your problem is the scaler board. Those things are failing left and right. This particular model is one piece of Chinese garbage. We can't keep the things in stock.

Philips will instruct you to take it to the nearest Philips authorized service center or send the unit to them. They're not in the business of exchanging parts, even in warranty, if the person who's doing the installing is not a Philips authorized service tech. I'm afraid the service end of consumer electronics works that way and always has.
Re: [MOtvGuy] No Picture on Philips 32PF7320A/37B [In reply to] Can't Post

yeah but they're warranty is totally lame. Do they really expect me to spend over $500 dollars in freight to send in a busted TV? Are they going to do the same to send it back? That's over $1000 dollars in shipping fees that could be avoided if they would send me the parts I need. I had a Dell LCD monitor go bad, and they shipped me a new one and had me return the old one. Why can't philips just do that?

Because as mentioned many times before on this and other sites,Philips after sales service is about as much use as a chocolate kettle. At least now you wont make the same mistake again next time you want new electronics.
