A half screen would typically be caused by panel control (usually a D board in Panasonic). Logic buffer, or panel. And any interconnecting cables.

I've never seen that model, I'm assuming its not a US version. But the troubleshooting would be the same.

True it's a EU model i think ... and it's not an TV as it hasn't have a tuner .. it's more a monitor.
I believe it has the same internals as a TH-42PV60E

if panel is broken, on the white part when i disconnect a ribbon cable the white goes black .. is that maybe a sign that panel isn't broken??

Re: [J-man] Panasonic TH42PH9 Half screen working [In reply to] Can't Post

Not necessarily. You are just removing all input waveforms from the logic buffer.

Look just below the logic buffer for a piece of metal running over the ribbon cables that connect to the lower side of the buffer. These connect the panel to the logic buffer.

If you remove that metal covering, you will be able to see the little IC's on the ribbon cables. You will look for one that is physically burnt. If that is the case, the panel is shot.

Yes, that is good news. When those fail the panel has to be replaced.

Now work backwards towards the D board. The problem would then almost have to be something with the D board, buffer or cables between.

The cables are looking good .. is there a way to check the D board or buffer?

Not that I know of. The manuals on those will tell you to replace those boards to test.

You could try ohm checking the small brown surface mount capacitors. If you find a group that is shorted to ground, that would be an indication that the IC they are connected to is bad.

Yeah iknow what you mean .. did that with an other plasma i got .. 1 of the IC's shorten tryed to solder a new IC .. but no luck the IC's feet are to small hehe.

Ill first order a D board .. let you know if it worked.
if not ill get a buffer.
Is it best to replace both buffers C1 and C2 .. or is it ok to replace only the buffer where there is no picture?

Just replacing the one should be fine. I've never seen any requirement for replacing logic buffers as a pair.

One other thing I thought of, did you switch the ribbon cables that lead from the D to each of the C boards?

Look and see if they are the same size and number of pins, and if the same switch them around.

No. Does the D board have two ribbon cables going to the C boards? If it does, one should be going to C1 and the other going to C2.

I can't look up anything on your set, so I'm guessing at things I've seen on Panasonic plasmas I've worked on in the past.Wink

Ok, then I would say you've either got a bad C or panel.

No, I don't think that really tells us much. The waveforms from the SD and SU are still present, so you'll see random things. But I don't know for sure, I've never disconnected them on a known good TV.
