Philips TV repair questions Can't Post

Philips TV
Model 30PW8402/37
Chassis A02U

Issues: Currently the only way to get the TV to turn on is to leave it unplugged for a few hours then turn it on. When it turns on it usually flashes a lot of green, resembling a rave lightshow or something, then after 10-15 seconds the picture will come up and work fine until the TV is turned off. After it's off it will not come on again until it is unplugged for a few hours. When the picture actually works there are faint green tinted lines stretch horizontally across the screen only visible in dark scenes or blackness and the image is slightly bowed in an hourglass fashion.
There is no sound until the picture comes up.
If the TV has not been unplugged it will sound like it powers up, but will not light up and the led will blink a seemingly random pattern that seems something like morse code with long and short flashes.
The main circuit in the back had cat pee on it when I opened it up, i cleaned it off with a moist paper towel, with seemingly no effect but reduced odor. Nothing appears to be burned/scorched or otherwise out of place.

I've done a bit of searching but can't really narrow down any particular issue that might be causing the problems. I don't have the TV know-how to identify if it's fixable or a lost cause.
This TV was free, laying around in a garage. Was told it was broken and wanted to see if I could fix it somehow. It seems like it would be fun to try.

I'm not interested in taking it to a repair shop to be charged bookoo moneys on an old TV like this one.

So the question is, can anyone tell me what is wrong with this TV and should I even try to repair it?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Your TV is finished. Urine is acid and other things, and it will continue to rot the TV. You cant just mop it up it would need stripped and washed and even then its doubtful. If you have household insurance claim it on that, if not enjoy the short time it stays working.

winard;.....
Try this:...1st,KILL the cat!!!...Sly...Just kidding....

Quote
should I even try to repair it?

Your call,depends on your background,TV / electronics experience,etc...

Seriously,try this:...
Remove CAREFULLY the back cover...
You need to locate the flyback....
It will have a large red wire coming from the top & 2 adjustments on the side....
That red wire has 30,000 volts on it when the set is on
& will hold that voltage for quite awhile even when the set is OFF!..
USE EXTREME CARE
when you do this...
KEEP your hands AWAY from that red wire when the set is ON!!!
On the side of the flyback there's 2 adjustments...
The top one is for "focus", self explanitory, for a sharp & clear pix...
The one under focus is "screen".....
This is the one you are going to adjust...
With the set up & running, adjust the "screen" control just a tiny bit counter-clockwise...
You may see a slight reduction in overall brightness....
The faint green tinted lines that stretch horizontally across the screen
only visible in dark scenes should dissappear....
IF not turn the "screen" control just a bit more....
Do NOT repeat a 3rd time...

The other possibility is that the CRT has an intermittent short...
This can be solved with an isolation transformer that can be had for about $12-$15 + S&H....
They're not hard to install & I can help you out if need be....

This "could" be the CRT (Pix Tube)...We'll worry about that later..

Quote
After it's off it will not come on again until it is unplugged for a few hours.

Fail safe/protect circuits are kicking in...Normal,when there's a problem with certain circuits...

It IS a code from the microprocessor's self diagnostics telling us what it found wrong....
We may need you to "de-code" the flashes for further help....
It is NOT a random pattern, but a sequence of numbered flashes we use to
identify which circuit has problems....
When you unplug the TV , the micro resets itself & the TV now thinks there's
no problem til you turn it on again...NOT to worry at this time....

Finally for now:....
Depending where the cat peed "may" be a fixable problem....
Your TV is NOT "finished" from what I determined from your post!!!!
It appears to me that due to the "green" problem is why you got the set in the 1st place...

IF you are uncomfortable doing ANY of this , PLEASE let me/us know....OK....

GOOD LUCK & STAY SAFE....

if it hasn't been too long since it was wet dry the board good with a blow dryer because it may still have moisture under parts that you couldn't wipe off

I think we lost "winard" & this "might" be the reason...
==>""Your TV is finished.""....Said by "xxxxxx"...Mad
I know from experience that cat pee is NOT neccessarily fatal to electronics....
It's a shame that on a forum such as this , that we have 1 or 2 individuals that are SO quick on the draw....
Without seeing the set, who's to know where exactly the cat peed...
It "could" have been in an area that would've been relatively harmless....

Re: [Ron.M] Philips TV repair questions [In reply to] Can't Post

Thanks for the response.

I found the flyback, and a little turn fixed the green lines across the screen.

The TV didn't initially turn on when I tried it after it being off overnight this time. I did a lot of plugging it in and turning it on and unplugging and eventually it went from just a black screen to giving me a green lightshow for 10-20 seconds before going dark. After that it eventually turned on on it's own. When it was all dark and when it gave me green lights it showed different codes. The code it's giving me is:
7 short, 1long, 3short, 1short, 1long, 2short, 1long
and then it repeats.
If I turn it off it will take 20-30 seconds before it give any audio/visual when turning it on again. It seems that it has to be off for a certain amount of time before it won't come back.

I wrote that ^ yesterday. My internet is giving me issues, i keep losing connections by the time i hit post reply.

The cat pee looks ancient, it wasn't my cat... or it could have been, this TV has been in my garage for over half a year at least.

Today the TV is just turning on after 30sec-1min.

Re: [winard] Philips TV repair questions [In reply to] Can't Post

In my time Ive tried to clean TVs where A/ a little lad peed through an open window into it B/ the cat did it C/ a drunk heaved into a corner into it D+++/ booze coke and the like was spilled into it and E/ the potplant expelled its juices overnight into it. All create their own issues. In TVs you have very small gaps, these create capilliaries for chemicals in the liquids and once they are there you will not get them out. I suggest before anyone jumps to conclusions as to how to dry things they take a few science lessons, dried uric acid amongst fine copper wire is a time bomb, spend time and money fixing this is the action of the uninformed.

winard;....

Welcome back...Smile...Thought we lost ya!!!

1st:....I don't give a rat's @$$ how cat pee OR vomit OR booze/coke etc , gets into TVs...
The fact that its there is a moot point....
"Time bomb" , NOT neccessarily!!!....
Depends , ONCE AGAIN, where its at...PERIOD.....
Lets move on....

Lets rule in OR out a CRT problem before we get too much further involved....
Unplug the TV & GENTLY remove the CRT module....
Position the module AWAY from any other wiring & the chassis....
Free float the module in mid-air , so to speak...
Plug the TV back in & turn it on...
You should get audio in about 15-30 seconds OR less..
Leave it on for about 2-3 minutes...
IF you hear ANY static from the chassis OR arcing ANYWHERE ,immediately UNPLUG the TV...
Do NOT handle or go near the CRT module while the TV is ON...
The audio should remain ON til you turn the TV off...
While this is happening, observe the LED to see if it is flashing the codes again....
I have the service manual for this TV & somethings not right about the codes you posted....
Re-count the flashes & post them here...
The codes will start with the LED staying on for about 1 second, then go off for about 1 1/2 second, then should flash a coded number of 1 or more flashes...
Then a pause of about 3 seconds , then possibly another coded flash(es)...
When you get the LED staying on for about 1 second, you have all the codes...It repeats....

Just to satisfy "some" people here,WHERE exactly is the cat pee at ????
How far into the TV did it get ???

Re: [Ron.M] Philips TV repair questions [In reply to] Can't Post

The TV is turning on now without flashing any codes currently. Not sure why the change, i haven't touched anything but the flyback. So i can't get the code.

The urine was a light sprinkle over the main board. I'm not worried too about it because it's not a heavy soak and i've wiped up urine drenched electronics before and never really had issues unless it fried instantly.

I'm fairly busy for the next few days so i probably won't have time to mess with it. I'll most likely get back to you Friday or Saturday with the results.

Thanks for the assistance Ron.M.

Do NOT do ANY of my last post until the set acts up...
Reason is that we will NOT gain any info that would help us narrow down the problem....
ie;NO symptoms,NO clues....

The discussion about "cat pee" as far as I'm concerned is friggin over with...

And good luck to you too Ron, This will be another post going on Ad Infinitum. Sure I think your trying to help the guy but you are not, the TV failed due to urine so its still in there. Now mostly its dry and its a corrosive acid gnawing away at copper. When it happened or soon after, removing the boards, washing and neutralising them may have worked, but not now. So do your whatever it is, but please leave me out of your thoughts, no little snide remarks please I gave my view, Sure the guy doesnt like it but its my view as a pro, and guess what I would take bets that in the end this set wont be fixed, It will continue to do odd things till it packs up and that will be its end.
