Re: [Guest] Zenith 44" Rear-Projection LCD TV E44W46LCD [In reply to] Can't Post

I will be hooking this up to DirecTV later today (my TV arrives between 3 and 5 PM CST). I will report back later tonight

Question for the guy who keeps going back for price matching. When I purchased it online they threw in free shipping, a free PS DVD player and 3 DVDs. Are you saying that I could go back now and get the free gift card they are offering too? (They changed from the free DVDs and player to a $100 gift card)??? If so, I am printing out my receipt and heading down there!

The above post is correct. The new service plan covers bulb replacement and preventive maintance both. (I also work at best buy, and I'm not sure what the previous "employee" poster was thinking as when the price went up, we received a lot of info regarding what was now covered.)

FYI, on regular RPTV the price is still $249, but does including preventive maintance, including having someone come and align your color guns. Probably not up to ISF specs, but better than nothing.

I saw this set at another BB and was still not sold. It had a nice picture but 2 things turned me off. SDE was really bad, I could see it from 8' away. And the blacks were still not very black, this set was more a dark blue for blacks. The picture was nice, not too bad, but the SDE made it seem noisy. I'm not sure about the banding, because the SDE was so apparent and the noise so annoying that any banding may have been covered.

It had potential, but not worth it to me.

Previous poster said "plasma gas" wasn't covered. How could it be!!!! Contrary to popular belief, the gas on plasmas can't be refilled. If it somehow sprung a leak to the gas was released, the TV is dead.

If anyone ever tries to sell you service on a plasma based on the fact the "plasma gas refills are covered." run away. Either their a liar or they don't know what they're talking about.

I have no banding problem; The IIP setting [on] makes the blacks blacker; there is a single bulp, mtbf is 10,000 hrs according to lg specs; to improve your regular cable channels appearance only use the component in from your cable box. dont use s-video or normal cable hookup. I have no screen door effect at all. see my previous post on about page 3.

There is only 2 pages, this being the 2nd one. So you don't have any SDE? Wow, that floors me. Neither set I saw had a remote, and I didn't want to full with the set without one, but your mention of IIP setting intrigues me. As for the SDE, did you tweak the set to get that out as well? You have my attention :)

I know the second picture (sub) when using PIP or twin screen can only be Ant, or composite video. This means that if the main picture is using component and the sub is using video 1, you can't swap the picture. This is fine with me, but is there anyway to get the sound from the sub picture in this case. On some TVs you can switch just the sound between the main and sub pictures. Can you do it on this?

If you have hd cable [or hd sat] and only use component or dvi in then you can upconvert everything to 720p or 1080i. so any pixilization native to your tv will be small ; when I sit 8 ft away I see none [poor eyes?] If your signal is poor you will have some breakup and poor picture quality. So when you upconvert you are looking at a fine grid from your tv but the broadcast picture will have lesser resolution but will show at a true 480p. My local pbs station is from LA about 200 miles away and is sent up the coast via microwave and when the fog roles in the picture gets poor. however most channels [hd or not] are downloaded via sat locally [I have charter hd cable] and all those look very good. I don't use pip and I only use digital audio out to a dts, thx home theater system .

Re: [Guest] Zenith 44" Rear-Projection LCD TV E44W46LCD [In reply to] Can't Post

This is a real simple question.

Here it goes: Low-End 42-Inch EDTV PLASMA (Costco carries one for around $2300) OR the ZENITH 44-Inch Rear Projection?

Which one would you buy? The TV will be used daily for routine viewing, with a STARPOWER digital converter.

HELP!! I'm very ignorant about this stuff.

They both can look good , compare them with a normal [not hd] source channel or a dvd, look at what you watch the most. if dvd's are your main viewing pleasure it will be several years before their resolution is beyond 480p. If you are going to use voom sat or have a lot of hd channels available you may want a native hd screen.

Plasma also opens up the possibility of burn-in depending on your viewing habits. If you play alot of video games or watch a lot of 4:3 shows and don't want to stretch them, plasma may not be the best choice. If not, no worries!

Check out http://www.avsforum.com if you haven't already for more than you ever wanted to know about burn-in and every other display shortcoming. Beware, it may make you not want to buy anything for as bad as people make things sound! Smile

Jet- I saw the set at BB sitting next to the Sammy 46". The pics were nice, but the Sammy made the Zenith look noisy. I'm not sure if it's noise or SDE, but I could clearly see it 8 feet away. Additionally, the blacks were blue/purple as mention previously. Is there a setting or tweak you made to get rid of this issue? It wasn't the source because the Sammy looked hot. I see rainbows and wife gets headaches so the mass marketed DLP isn't an option for some of us.

IIP set to on makes blacks blacker but lcd will not be as good as dlp in showing dark grey to black. grey scales will tend to have a greenish blue tinge, play with brightness and contrast. also most of the time you get a better picture with sharpness down I set mine between 30 and 40. you may reduce vertical artifacts with reduced sharpness.

I picked up this tv 2 days ago...pretty pleased with it so far..the vertical banding is noticable to me but you get used to it....one thing i dont like is the limited viewing angle but i guess that is what happens with lcd RP's..but i do have a question for somebody with this tv...when you hook up dvd through component does it automatically display it at the highest resolution or do you manually have to set it to 720 or 480?? i did not see this in the manual anywhere..thanks

When do you see the vertical banding? All the time? Do you see it when watching DVDs/HD, or only when watching standard def? Any info on the banding issue is appreciated.

Overall are people pretty pleased with this set? I'm looking for a smaller (46" or less) set at a decent price to hold me over for 2 years or so (when I move) .... then I'll take the leap into the larger (and hopefully much more mature) technologies.

Re: [burclaw15] Zenith 44" Rear-Projection LCD TV E44W46LCD [In reply to] Can't Post

OK....I got it! BB delivered it at 3:45 CST, well within their 3-5 time frame. Kudos to the BB delivery team.

My first impression is wow! This thing is WAAAAY lighter than my 36" tube. Yee Haw...Plus it fit PERFECTLY in my 43 inch (wide) space.

Hooked it up and was pleased with the output without even adjusting the settings. I did play with them a little (used some of the other posters setttings) and will post mine here when I get them they way I want them.

1. PS2 -- (Hitman Contracts) via S-video - WOW!

2. DVD - non-progressive scan via S-Vdieo - WOW again! (My free progressive scan DVD should be in on the 5th and I can't wait to see the difference once connected via the component interface.)

3. DirecTV -- standard receiver (non-HD, non-DVR) via S-video -- Better than my tube but not excellent. Some of the lower quality channels do have a slight SD effect but I would say that it is acceptable\tolerable. I am also waiting on a new DiretTV recdiver which is still "standard" but does have a component out interface. So I guessing that this will improve things to some extent. But I did not experience any of the "green problems"

So, by the end of the week my config will be as follows:

DirecTV - via component on input 1. Sound piped via digital audio to a Yamaha home theater and via RCA directly to TV. (gives me an either or both setup)

DVD - Progressive scan via component on input 2. Sound piped to Yamaha home theater via digital audio

PS2 - via side S-video as needed.

BYE BYE clunky AV switch!

Again, I am not going to fuss with the color\contrast\tint\etc settings until I get everything setup the way it will stay. At that time I will post my settings.

Zenith 44" Rear-Projection LCD TV E44W46LCD [In reply to] Can't Post

I bought this television two weeks ago and it has been worth every penny. I don't see any greens. The picture is awesome most of the time, and on progressive scan DVD movies just blows me away. The quality of the picture can be affected by the playback tape being used by the particular station, especially noticeable difference on old reruns. This may cause the occasional screen door effect, but most of the time is not there. I have been in television/video for ten years and looked at a lot of televisions. Can't say anything for the durability yet, but this is a good TV for the money.

I for one appreciate all the reviews on this TV -- both good and bad. I'm torn as to whether or not to buy it (football season is right around the corner), and this feedback is invaluable.

Has anybody watched HD sports (i.e., ESPNHD) on this TV yet? I've noticed some artifacting on other LCDs while watching HD sports -- just curious if this set suffers from the same thing.

Thanks again!

Re: [Guest] Zenith 44" Rear-Projection LCD TV E44W46LCD [In reply to] Can't Post

Bought this two days ago. First hookup was through s video from my Direct Tv Tivo (non-hdtv). After tuning to the settings mentioned earlier in this thread...the picture was not great, but close in quality to the 32" CRT (non-HD) it is replacing. The vertical banding mentioned on this thread is an annoyance when watching direct tv.

I bought some component cables (monster) and hooked up a progressive scan dvd player and ran a fiber optic audio line through my receiver. Popped in Finding Nemo. After configuring the DVD player to optimize the signal, I was VERY impressed. Nice clear picture, banding was only visible in certain scenes (Nemo swimming out to touch the butt in one of the first chapters was one that comes to mind).

Unfortunately, after my wife and I just watched Last comic standing and she was powering the tv down, we both noticed a bright green golf-ball sized spot about 10 inches from the top and 10 inches from the right. I waited about 10 minutes, powered the TV back up, and there it was, still visible on the screen.

WHAT THE HECK IS IT?

I have Direct TV coming later in the week to hook up the HDTV antenna, receiver, and dish. I was going to wait and see how clear the HD channels look (just blew $300 on high-end dvi and component cables), but I am thinking about taking this thing back tomorrow.

Has anyone here ever seen the Samsung HLN437W DLP Rear Projection TV? ( I have a built-in entertainment center and only have 42" W and 31" H to deal with) It seems like the Samsung 43" DLPs are dropping in price to where they are around the same price as the Zenith. If anyone has any experience with the Samsung...or any freaking clue why I have a big green dot on my Zenith, please let me know.

Thanks for taking the time to respond.

I was just in BB today. This price of the service plan is now 399 instead of 249 becasue it DOES cover bulbs now.

best buy has the signal running to the tvs through component video the outputs on the wall sometimes ware out because the signal running to the tv has been split again and again the pic quality on this unit is amazing i can tell you with almost complete certainty that it was just hooked up to a week output at the star i deal with this problem all of the time at work. Those signal are very sensitive. If you switched the two tvs then the one from the second store would look better on the first store's input. Im not tryin to tell you what to buy but dont let that problem worry its not an issue with the tv
